Chris Wolstenholme: The Sticky Ver. 1

My cover band plays Starlight and a couple other tunes that require overdrive so I settled on a Hardwire CM-2 together with my Zoom B3. I run them into separate channels on my little Yamaha MG102c mixer to get a clean blend and it sounds pretty good!

Based on videos I've watched of CW playing Starlight it looks like he's also using an octaver but utilizing only the lower octave based on his hand position.

Starlight live is for 99,9% sure Animato + OC-2. Studio tone most likely had another distortion blended to it, but the live version is simplified.

Long time lurker but first time poster in this thread, I tried remaking some of my fave Muse basslines and plan on eventually putting together some youtube tutorials etc.

Mainly because there is a lot of useless ones up there that don't even sound 30% of the way there. (Although there is the occasional decent one) and I am a massive CW fanboy.

I know it's not perfect but probably as close as I can get with the gear I have, and without spending hours or days trying to get each sound.
Any feedback on where I'm close and what can be improved would be pretty useful, and if you want to know how I got any of the sounds I am happy to help :)

I've heard lots of people say the recorded is definitely a synth, but that live he plays bass. So this is interesting to me as well.

Yeah it's pretty weird.

5 Days later (on Absolution's release date) , he played it on bass and got it spot on: (Deep Impact?)


I was gonna call playback because it's the closest to the original I've ever heard it live, but then Hysteria from the same performance sounds nothing like the studio track, sounds like the Deep Impact:



My guess is they were still trying to figure out what they were doing live since it was literally the day the album came out?

Wow. Tiro does sound exactly like the recording. Even hysteria sounds like at least the synth part but lacks the dry and Animato channels mixed in.

This makes me want that Future Impact...

Played Hysteria & plug in baby with a pub / function cover band using my revised Muse tribute band pedalboard at the weekend. Think I'm getting there.
Totally agree with the poster above who says the bass tones you find on youtube are woeful....I'm thinking of doing some tutorials myself.

Heres my muse tribute band pedalboard for those who didn't see it in the pypb thread.

Whilst i do have the animato & future impact, i really don't think they are essential at all.

This setup allows me to mix 2 fuzzes and clean together with a triple parallell signal (Exactly like Chris does) and assign it all to 1 footswitch using midi.
Its a cheaper and easier way to replicate all of Chris's rackmounted gear.

I've been using an Animato clone for a few months now that the @giglawyer built for me. I've never played an original one but from the demos I hear of it, its dead nuts on. He also built a clean blend into so it's really quite a great dirt box for bass on it's own and that is usually how I use it.

Which brings me to my question. If I were to stack the Animato with a muff, what are your guys' rough settings when stacking them and playing them? My signal gets way too compressed and nasty when I stack those two dirt boxes. BUT, and this is a big but, I have a lot of gain staging on my board and I suspect that is the issue. I use 4 tone shapers and or preamps, the DOD FX10 > rusty box > B7K Ultra > Fuzzro Feed Me. So you guys think that is the issue here?

Is your animato the one i saw that looks exactly like the original but has a 4th knob? I drooled over that a bit!

Can't help with the other question, i don't stack fuzzes at all!

Picking y'alls brain - Nowadays, what is the simplest pedal-based, single amp solution to achieve the three path/chain tone of Clean, Animato, Muff? I've got one Boss LS2 - so that covers blending one distortion/fuzz with one clean. But a distortion on each loop means no clean. So what's the next step? Another LS2 just for the distortions?

Well these are the options I have used depending on what I feel like:

-two LS2's, Animato and muff

-one LS2, Animato, muff with clean blend (bass big muff would probably work well here too)

-one LS2, Animato with clean blend, muff
