My band does Starlight and I gave up trying to sound exactly like Wolstenholme's tone on it. You just can't match $2000 tone with a cover band budget and it's not worth it to go all the way unless it's actually a tribute band.

I finally figured starlight out, its OC2 > Animato > Mastotron , going to try it out with my Muse tribute tonight to see how it sounds in the mix.
I also need to get around to recording some of these tones!

Talkbass seems to be invading my inbox again so I think a few people here might like to hear some sound demos. Going to do some run through of the songs with settings.

I ran tone and distortion at around 1 o'clock but I still feel like it was a little too much drive and could have done with a tiny more blend. Key thing I noticed is the amp settings. I didn't have a Marshall on hand but I approximated by doing some fair mid scooping on the amp, something pretty common on OOS, I gathered to leave room for Matt. I don't exactly have three amps but you can get damn good with just one.
Not that I used one, but it seems like some compression helps too. I didn't try this until after I published this either, but it seems like some transients between notes can be smoothed out with a very light, quick reverb, tightening it up.

Nice work on Hyper Music there Crowella, closest to the original I've heard. Listening to yours I realise I always play it with way too much drive.

Actually didn't know how to play this until a couple of hours ago so the playing is average. I think Chris plays it an octave higher with an octaver but I just played it lower.
Probably a bit too much Distortion but I don't like taking too long fiddling with knobs and I'm pretty happy with how close it got in the end.

Hello! I'm new here and I just wanted to know if someone could help me with some questions.
1. Since Chris seems to use now an EHX Octave Multiplexer, does he still use Boss OC-2? And, if I had to choose between an EHX Octave Multiplexer and a Boss OC-3, which one would get me closer to Muse's octave sound for bass guitar? (Boss OC-2 has become a little bit hard to find in optimal conditions).
2. Although Boss OS-2 seems to sound very similar to an Animato, I was listening to MXR M80 Bass D.I.+ and I think it could get even closer to Animato's sound, plus the advantage that it could really help to preserve low end and create a nice, powerful sound, what would be very useful to create a second effects loop with an underlying Animato sound blending with clean tone. But, do you think MXR M80 distortion gets closer to Animato than Boss OS-2 does?

He uses both, they have different tones. Some examples of songs with OC-2 tones would be Starlight, Plug in Baby and Supremacy. I'm not so sure about Multiplexer, but it's at least in Unsustainable and possibly in Follow Me. Probably in other songs too.
No, I'd still go with OS-2 and use LS-2 or other similar solution for clean blend. Chris used OS-2 to record Showbiz and Animato is not very far from it. I'm pretty sure the major factor in his tone changing from Showbiz to OoS(and staying pretty similar from that on) is the fact he changed his amps from Ampeg to Marshall and started to use his Pedullas and Fender JB's over Warwick basses. I personally use a Marshall DBS 7200 + 7041 and run OS-2 instead of Animato, the tone is so close imo, I don't see a reason to kill my wallet to buy an Animato at this point.
I like the way my darkglass duality sounds with the duality knob at 3oclock for starlight. It's not identical but it sounds awesome with that bassline.

Hi @kaputsport, I have a question: Looking to buy an octave pedal soon, and I want to know if there's any other synthy octave pedal that can replace the OC-2? Looks like the used OC-2 are getting quite pricey and if I'm gonna go over $100 for a pedal, it might as well be new

i don't want to buy a replica, just want to know if i can replace Animato with anything that exist already - but is not an Animato's clone/replica etc.
On Starlight he has the OC-2 engaged for the verses with no dry signal at all and plays it the octave up on the neck. For the chorus he (or most likely his tech) switches off the OC-2 and it's pure Animato with dry blend.
I would check out the Joyo Ultimate Drive - this thing sounds awesome and it is only $32 on Amazon!i don't want to buy a replica, just want to know if i can replace Animato with anything that exist already - but is not an Animato's clone/replica etc.
I have this pedal and while I like it, it doesn't sound very animato-like to me. Maybe I haven't dialed it up properly.
Perhaps it is bass-sensitive? Of course the other option is to find a used Hardwire CM-2. Regardless, unless the pedal has a clean blend built in you would need a blender so that you could really crank the overdrive. Wolstenholme's overdriven sound isn't subtle by any means.
That is good to know about the Ultimate Drive though!
That one is an OCD clone? OK. For Marshall-alike tones i use Z.Vex Distortron. As we may hear when we listen to Animato, there's a lot, really lot of compression, similar to Darkglass B7K's baked tone, but the timbre is too different than you could expect of OCD and its clones or another Marshalloids. Neither OCD, nor Box of Rock or Distortron did not get me into Animato's area. But i still have some time... I do believe in it, anyway.
