Chris Wolstenholme: The Sticky Ver. 1

I might as well stop derailing the Darkglass thread... for anybody interested, here's a little something I've worked on, Plug in Baby without Deep Impact(?!), I'd say the experiments are showing results. Recorded straight up from the camera simply because I couldn't get good enough tone from mic/di and at this stage of it still being a wip didn't want to spend a lot of time tweaking the recording. Few bits of the song and then rundown of the pedals and settings + amp.

So I finally got a deep impact.

Time is running out tone is easily achievable and spot on, kinda weird getting used to playing a synth though to make it track properly. Gotta be extra careful.

Also, Hysteria sounds 95% of the way there with Black Muff+Animato+Deep Impact. Like, crazy close, and I didn't even tweak any knobs from just what I had on the pedalboard at the time.

Deep Impact on its own kinda glitches a bit from the tracking playing the Hysteria bassline (maybe I just need more practice) but with the muff and animato in the mix it's not noticeable, and you get that synthy tone over the top that seems to be missing with just muff+animato+clean.

It was an expensive purchase, but I'm quite happy with the Deep Impact for getting the TIRO and Hysteria tones pretty much spot on.

My next goal is going to be to try Plug in Baby now that I have the Impact but I feel like its going to take a while and a lot of knob turning/patch cable-ing to get anywhere close.

Will also try to make some recordings soon :)

Which DI patches did you use for those songs? The Future Impact is able to emulate them, so I'm sure many of us would like to know.

Has it ever been discussed of trying a Prunes and Custard in parallel with an Animato and clean for the Hysteria sound? I saw a clip of a dude using a PnC by itself playing Hysteria and it sounded similar to the synthy layer that sits on top of the Animato/dry bass.

Hello Adam! Didn't expect to find you wandering about on this thread :) I really like your videos dude. I seen your Muse ones. They were awesome. The Human Gear Animato...is it a distortion?
Thanks for the kind words!

Yea the Animato is a distortion which is like the heart of Chris sound on almost everything. Crowella effects makes a clone called the Animated, which I have and it's spot on. And much cheaper than an original.

I checked the muse wiki, and Chris may not have had the Animato at that point but used a Boss OS-2 distortion. From what I've read before it sounds similar to the Animato and is much cheaper and easier to find. I've never personally heard or tried one so I can't attest to that, nor can I say for sure that is what he used.

But back to my original comment, it sounds like an Animato to my ears, it has a distinct sound that once you hear it for yourself you can pick it out.

Hey,

I'm new on this forum.

Bass player and big fan of muse for a long time, I guess this topic is made for me :D

About Showbiz Tone, forget about the animato, Chris bought it in late 2000, at the time he just had a boss OS-2 and a EHX Sovtek Big Muff.

I guess that in the song Showbiz, it's a boss OS-2, as it's not very distorted.

I worked on the Plug in Baby tone last year, it's not 100% accurate but that's how it sounds :

If I remember correctly, I done it with a boss LS-2 :
loop A -> Big Muff through a line6 M5 ( with a filter simulation )
loop B -> Animated clone through a BSW ( to get a buzzy sound )
+ a dry track to keep some low ends.

And of course, I used an active bass.

I own a boss OS-2, and IMO, it's just a bad sounding animato. It's not a bad pedal considering the price, but with no limit budget, I think buying an animato or at least a clone, is probably a better idea, as it's more versatile, and probably more " clear " in high gain settings.

When did these things dip in price so bad. I wish I still had mine. But when I sold mine for $180, it went in like 10 min. And that was low at the time.

$189 has pretty much always been the new price for a P&C. I bought my first one over 10 years ago for that. Prices have sometimes been high on the used market because new ones often weren't available anywhere. Seems like Paul Crowther has been building them more regularly lately. At least I'm not seeing them as being "out of stock" most places anymore.

Think that dude was me :)

Was thinking the same but my Prunes & Custard died on me so can't try it now!
