Circle K strings...

So I finally got to hear those new strings in a band setting AND through a decent rig (GK mb500+GL410. Dear God! If you have a tight low A compared to a floppy one the improvement in tone is amazing! And they were just bright enough to give me that edge that, as I thought, that would set me apart from the guitar and keep me from just being a faint low end indiscernible from the guitar.

But I seriously cant get over how nice it sounded! So pumped for out next show!

Talk about fast shipping - it makes me wonder if Skip is bribing the US postal service. I ordered my strings Tuesday afternoon - well after the postal service should have run (at least in my time zone). I got them today. That's less than 48 hours - heck, I'm almost more impressed that the government moved that quickly!

Anyway, thanks CKS for getting them out so lightning-fast.

From an initial feel they do seem looser - makes me wonder at what tension they're wound at. Almost feel like the wraps have a tiny amount of space between them. I know what I'll be working on later... :bassist:

I ordered on Monday night, got'em Wednesday. My second set- just as quickly as the first. USPS deserves some credit too!

I got the .150 set Neebs, with a .112 E. I hope I'll have time to string it up tonight but as it was my daughter's birthday yesterday (and my son's is later this month) I have two bicycles to assemble first. Provided that goes well, I'll de-string my bass, oil it up, re-string it and go from there.

I noticed your signature Neebs, I too play for my church's praise group and our heavy/nu-metal band. Our sanctuary rig is an SWR Working Man's 15 (which doesn't really impress me). This is our monitor, with the mains being two JBL line arrays with a 2x18 JBL sub on each side of our platform. Those really project the B! My bass has a Bart pre/pups so I turn down the lows a bit so the notes on my B can be heard (and still felt a little, but the organ handles most of that).

Our concert rig is a 1200 watt Ampeg SVT 6 Pro on top of three Hartke cabs (2-4x10's, 1-1x15; had two 15's but one was stolen). My signal is then sent through our PA, about 23,000 watts worth. It rocks.

My goal is not so much emphasis on the fundamental but good tone across the entire range. I can already notice the thicker sound of the CK's and will need to cut a little bottom off my tone but note definition is what makes for a great sound, not muddy, teeth rattling low bass. I like that, but our band sounds tighter with a more defined bass tone.

Well, the strings went on without a hitch, and I only had to touch the intonation on the B and E strings. Also, no filing was needed for a perfect fit in the nut, which was a pleasant surprise. I did have to raise the action a tad and loosen up the truss rod a bit (it had changed a bit since my last set-up was done).

Now I'll sound a bit like a broken record. String to string feel is remarkably even; volume matches pretty good across them also. I'm glad I went with the thicker gauge as I can pick faster on the E and B strings - they don't seem to move around as much. Credit the increased tension.

Real-world testing will have to wait until this weekend when I play through the rigs at my church; all I could do was listen through headphones. The tone is similar to my 3-month old D'Addario ProSteels, but 'newer'. I'm sure I'll notice a difference when I can play through some more wattage and real cabs. Tone is noticeably better, and it has a tad more sustain.

I get a little buzzing but my action is set to ~2mm from the top of the 12th fret to the bottom of each string. Low for a 34" scale bass but it seems to work on mine. I play a little heavy and the B buzzes a bit but nothing too obnoxious.

Hope these pics help; taken with my phone:

A setup better than a 100 watt combo amp. :P
And I actually meant while I play at church, the amp gets really taxed playing the lower notes. But it does sound awesome at lower volumes. You can just tell its saying "I'm not strong enough to do what you want at those low notes"

Well, if you want it to push a 32 Hz note, then that is an unreasonable request for most bass amps. However, boosting your low mids and mids will probably fix your issue.

It turns out that the fundamental is quite quiet compared to the second and third harmonic. Arguably, it might not even be loud enough to hear over the other harmonics, but it doesn't matter because your brain fills in the gap.
