Cirrus stopped working....any ideas??

Anyone out there got any idea why my Peavey Cirrus BXP recently died on me? :confused: Although the timing was perfect as it gave up right at the end of our first set :), with a fizzy disintegration of sound which suggested my batteries had simply given up :rollno: However, after replacing them both - it's an 18V circuit - I plugged in to find that I have no sound at all :hmm: :hmm: The bass is only two years old and prior to this has given me no trouble as my spare guitar, I wonder if anyone else has had the same bother with a Peavey or has or any suggestions what I can do to fix it :confused: ?

I had the same thing happen on my USA Cirrus. Just one day it stopped working. Turned out to be a bad pre-amp. Luckly, Cirrus Preamps are really inexpensive (under $100 new if I remember right), the downside is when you order one, you have to submit your serial# to them for your Cirrus (this way they don't have Peavey electronics going into a custom bass.... stupid, yes. But hey, it's not my company).

Thanks logic, I also feared that this may be the case, I don't know how I would identify it being the preamp though - any way to use a meter on it? I recently fitted a Nordy preamp to my main bass and looked at the price of the Peavey unit because it is great. I was amazed to find how much cheaper the Cirrus preamp is in comparison - for me it has great tone and freq settings....not a problem submitting my serial# ;)

Did you buy the bass new? If so, I beleive it's still going to be covered under warranty ('though I don't know how the UK distributor handles warranty claims). If not, then I'd start with verifying the voltage of both batteries with a VOM. If they check out as good, then I'd check the jack and make sure the jack is switching correctly (the ring connection of the T/R/S jack connects the batteries to ground to turn on the circuit). If that checks out, then make sure the HOT of the jack is connecting to your cord.

After that, check the battery clips. Those are generally really fragile connectors so check them for continuity from the battery terminal all the way to where they attach to the circuit board. After checking all those connections, if it still doesn't work I'd suspect the pre-amp.

I'm surprised that you did not receive a reply. Send your email to [email protected] This man, Aubrey Fulton, has helped me so many times over the years that I can't even count them. If he doesn't answer within a day, then he is either on vacation....or dead.

Batteries checked out and supply is ok Rick. Thanks for the suggestions JTE, no joy with those unfortunately, and I got the bass second hand with no known warranty. Thanks for that address dog1, I'll e-mail him now - I'd love to know what is the point of Peavey customer service if they ignore their customers and give them such poor service???
