Double Bass Class of 2012, where are you applying/auditioning?

I had to play 2 pages of 1st mov of kouss, up to the 2nd theme in the 2nd movement. All of Bach bourrees from the 3rd suite, excerpts Mozart 39 first movement and Beethoven 5 trio.
They asked about a lot of stuff such as summer camps, my teacher, my bass, and then asked about a fingering I used in Mozart 39.

Yep mine was pretty much the same... First two pages of the first movement, the first two parts of the 2nd movement, bach bourrees, mozart 40, beethoven 9... How did your scales and arpeggio go? I was pleasantly surprised with my scale but the third octave on the arpeggio could have been cleaner. Surprisingly casual, Robinson was wearing jeans and they spent half of the time joking about cleveland and Derek Zadninski. Somehow a student of Hal Robinsons came up that they were talking about told off a conductor or something like that and "pretty much told him to f off" as he put it. God knows how that conversation started, it was late and I barely remember half of the audition. I know the arpeggio wasn't perfect and I remember pausing got a second after the first phrase of the bach having one of those "oh crap" moments when you forget how to play something you've played a million times haha

Speaking of communicating with conductors:
My youth orchestra conductor went to Curtis for ever ago and always tells a story about how there was a bass player who showed up late to a rehearsal while Fritz Reiner was conducting at Curtis. When he walked in, he apologized for being late and Reiner told him to get out. The bass player, who was apparently not the smartest, asked if he meant out of the rehearsal or out of the school. Reiner thought about it for a second and said "out of the school". The kid was kicked out of Curtis. Or that's how the story goes at least.

Wow, that's terrible. I guess I would rather not get into curtis then be kicked out haha

Do you think they will make a call before April or do we really have to wait? There were some reapply great kids in my group, one of them even got in to Rice. I'm interested to see who gets in. But then again, I can always dream until the letter comes.

Hahaha yeah I think I'd rather be rejected too.

I don't know. Maybe they will, maybe not. Either way, I am going to be checking my email about every 10 minutes until the results from all the places I applied to come out.

Hello, junior in high school here.
From what I've read you all seem to know the ins-and-outs off college auditioning by now and prepared very well. Saying this, is there any advice on how you began college prep as a junior at this time of the year. What I should be doing/thinking? I'm currently working on kouss 1st and 2nd and just received conformation for attending Interlochen this summer. What should I do now? Any advice is appreciated! Thank you!

Dude, if you're talking about Curtis, just say it- your poorly worded rant about how people idealize Curtis is irrelevant. No one here is saying that that school is perfect or the greatest- it may not be, I'm not a student there. There are a lot of great schools- that's just one of them.

I have to admit I mis read that one... I thought you were talking about music major high school seniors in general. You quoted a reference that has nothing to do with curtis. I'm not going to get defensive, but if you look at where the recent curtis grads have gone compared to other school graduates, there it's quite a difference. Not to say that the school is perfect or that a non curtis grad couldn't compete with a curtis grad but it is a very highly respected school. Nobody claimed it to be anymore than that.

Curtis is a great school- just look at the videos their students post of Bach or other things. And they win a lot of great jobs, that's something that's fact. Is it the "best" school? Maybe not. But once you get past a certain level of institution, there can be no "best" because that's a subjective thing. You're approaching it the wrong way.

One of the most important things you guys need to think about is that you need to play with the best musicians possible while in school.

So here is a short list of other important things to remember:

#1 you need to be your best teacher

#2 go to a school that gives you a well rounded education unless you are 100% positive that you are going to be ready to win a job after graduating from an undergrad degree

#3 i prefer schools that are tuition free or that have a lot of scholarship money. Might as well save college tuition money for audition travel and other expenses like beer... Just kidding

#4 No one can guarantee you a job. Some institutions allow you to be flexible in your approach to music making, some do not. Not everyone will win an orchestra job! The majority will not!!!

#5 make goals for yourselves. Pieces, summer programs, concerts, recitals, etc. plan early for everything and be on top of your own education. Always go to a summer festival. Aspen, tanglewood, verbier, domaine, bowdoin, music academy of the west, noi, marlboro... The list goes on and on!

#6 do not be scared. No fear. Decide what you want to do and go for it 100%. Be proactive always

That's bassically (hah, a pun!) what my teacher has told me. Can't +1 that comment enough, it's the same things I'm considering myself.
