Cliff Burtons Rickenbacker

Personally I like the old Metallica better, and it's not because of Cliff... they were more "Thrashy and Edgy" back in the day... well, maybe it was Cliff.
That bass is super cool and the red looks really sweet... I absolutely love the sound of my Rick and I refuse to change anything on it (except strings) for fear it would make it sound even slightly different.
I TOTALLY dig the color though... ALMOST as cool as the custom green!

+1. sonic assassin should learn some respect. Jason Newsted was good - damn good. Great player with great feel and tone - perfect for Metallica. When Metallica went the way they did after the black album it wasn't Jason's decision - that was on Lars and Kirk. Funny how Jason, who's really accomplished something is humble and respectful and sonic assassin isn't.
Re Cliff, that's the "advantage" of dying young and on the way up - you never get old, you don't have to follow up the breakthrough album and you don't have to decide what direction to go on your 6th, 7th, 8th ... albums.
how exactly is he a massive tool???? unless you know him personally i wouldnt say that. any interview i've ever seen of him hes very humble and very respectful to whom he is talking to and talking about. hes also one ******* hell of a player and did cliff proud. all these burton fanatics need to man up, he died, he was an amazing bassist and i love metallica too, but im not gonna **** on the next bassist in line because they arent an exact replica or shadow of the former bassist. thats what makes a band ...a band. new members bring new tastes, new styles, a new direction. jason was never allowed that, he got thrown into a moving train and had zero control over where the train went.

yep. hes horrible. he surely didnt help the downfall of metallica. ive never liked him or anything he ever did.

a troll comes in and derails a thread for no reason. we were discussing cliff's basses, and apparently one of them was unfairly given to newsted. thats on topic.. albeit mean and likely from everyone elses perspective ignorant.. but hey.. its the internet.

that just happened to hit one of my buttons.
"...unfairly given to Newstead"? Hahahahahahahaha. Not your decision to make. Never was. The Lemmy suggestion is priceless, though.

id find a japanese copy to cut holes in, and if the sonic advantages are great enough, it might be worth cutting up a real one.

i imagine if cliff told rickenbacker to jump, theyd say "how high", so after a certain point, there was no risk. although ive got a feeling that setup was concocted before the metallica glory days.

I think the Kill 'em All stuff was recorded with the Ric still stock. I could be wrong though. I thought for sure the solo he played on Cliff 'Em All (Cliff's 2nd Gig) the Ric was still stock. It definitly had that "Ric" tone, even under the distortion and wah.

Also, I heard that Lars has Cliffs main Aria hanging in his basement, and Jason used his back up. Of course this is all hearsay from this forum, but makes since.

I have seen numorous mods done to RIC's. This seemed like a pretty common practice back in the day. If a pickup broke, or made to much noise, put in a "better"/different pickup. The unfortunite part on some of these (bigger pickups) is that routing out that much wood would often cause serious neck issues. That coupled with the fact that not alot of people understood/stand how the RIC truss rod system works, was a recipe for disaster for alot of these old 4001 basses. It doesn't surprise me that Cliff had reported neck problems with his RIC. I think if he would have asked John Hall, he could have had it serviced and corrected.

Did Jason ever play anything other than his Sadowsky basses?

Yeah, Cliffs Aria, Alembics, Fenders, Steinbergers, one or two ESP's, Jackon's, I think a Wal, and tonnes of others, he bought hundreds with his Metallica advance, IIRC, and then when he left the band, took his fave 100 or so, I can't quite remember the details.

I know he left a load as Metallicas bass collection.
