I am hoping that the LM5 will work well too we'll see....I could probably get a little nutty with Jimmy's pre I barely if ever touch the treble control.

BTW I am hoping to keep my basses to two. So I've got the LG5 and the UV70 and the LM5 on the way. I'm not sure I will be able to part with any of them we'll see. I did find a way to sell my beloved Lakland JO as well as my KBP5 w/DN, so there is hope....

I have yet to use the treble boost on either my Sadowsky or A-C (LM or LG). And.. I like treble. These basses just beautifully naturally extend into the treble region just like the passive vintage basses they are based on. I can see needing that treble boost if you are running out of a classic, sealed cab rig with no tweeter. Otherwise, not really necessary IMO and IME! On both the Sadowsky and A-C's, I do use maybe 10% bass boost with some rigs, just to fatten the low end. Any more than that sounds, well, active and processed (which isn't bad, but if I wanted that kind of tone, I'd play a Modulus or Roscoe or some such thing).

Your photo reminds me of how different a room can sound when it fills with people.

It's nice when you can use your wireless during sound check to wander far off the stage and into the room to hear yourself in the mix... nice, but usually meaningless as not much is in your control.

I'm not much for wireless units but in this case just getting my stuff to the stage was a nightmare and getting to the bathroom took about 15 minutes round trip.....As it goes the parade in town ends around 2PM and we don't start until 5PM, the drummer dropped in to drop off his stuff before the parade and went back home. In past years we were 1 of 2 or 3 bands this year we played from 5pm until midnight. Good for the wallet but oh did my hands ache...

Ken - I never use the treble either, the Sadowsky I run 10-20% bass boost all the time, on the LG maybe 5% sometimes.

Vic - I had to have the 70s spec the little kid at xmas in me couldn't wait for Jimmy to finish his masterpiece, who knows maybe I'll keep the UV70 and LM5. I REALLY like that spec.

I actually have a 70's spec bass on the way now (again... sorta') and am looking forward to it myself. I've been after "that sound" for quite some time. I was bouncing around between a few of them, including an LM, and essentially decided I wanted to spread the brands out a bit on this one.

Bottom line though, while I do have plenty of ash/maple stuff, and lotsa' good grind in those, I'm still very much looking forward to having a much more faithful 70's spec bass in my hands finally. I'm right there with ya. :)

Well please share, you know we're all not just AC snobs around here...:hyper::hyper:what is it???:hyper:

Haha I wana know too. After getting my LG5 and having tried Xavidman's Skjold and Celinder Update 5 he used to have when I was buying the LG5 from him, I've really wanted to add another Ash/Maple bass to my arsenal having let go of my MTD.

My main considerations have just been either a Sadowsky 5, ideally an NYC if I can come across one, or an LM5.

Ok, well, I'm generally not into posting about other basses in club threads, but since you asked...

It's a Nordy VJ5 Classic. Full 70's spec. Essentially the same thing as the LM Standard, which is what I would've gotten in an AC.

A lot of things weighed in on this decision, but basically, it really did eventually boil down to the VJ vs the LM. I decided to go VJ simply because I wanted to spread out my collection a bit more on the J front, and at least IMHO, my favorite AC is still the LG (sorry Ken :smug:). So Jimmy has me incredibly well covered on the 60's front. DONE with that! :D

Ironically, one reason I was pretty confident the VJ would get the job done is because of how favorably the 60's spec Classic VJ compared to the LG. I haven't had the chance to directly A/B as Tom has, but I remember at NAMM being immediately impressed with that 60's spec VJ in just exactly the same ways as I am with my LG. Plus, I've had the chance to play a couple 70's spec VJ5 Classics and they nail it IMHO.

Anyway, watch for deets and updates in the Nordy club thread.

I know I'm going to get killed for this question, but do any of you use a fender as a backup to your AC? Not interested in classic fender's, 90's and up.

Hello Peter,

Maybe i am wrong but are you considering to sell your LG 5??
In that case please inform me !

Reading about the LM5 and LG "cutting through the band" and PA , makes me wonder if I should choose for LG or LM?
I really like to have a warm but yet "well pronounced" sound both on stage and on the PA.

We always perform with a PA (FOH JBL : 2x18inch +2x12+ horn and a Roland Vmix- dig mixer).
I als o use a Carl Martin compressor that helps to "tighten up " the sound ( sorry for my metaforic language).

So , considering the above and I play allround styles of music
LM or LG ?

Peter can you tell me some more about the specs of your new ordered LM?

Thanks !

Pure personal taste and tone goal. LG's sound like GREAT old mid 60's J basses. If that's the tone you dig, get one of those. It's again, not that they don't cut through, but rather that if you are looking for that grindy, bright top end of an ash/maple instrument like an LM, you just aren't going to get that with an alder/RW instrument. Just different things.

So again, I don't think anyone is saying the LG (or quite frankly, any bass) is not capable of sounding great on a gig or sitting in a mix. The LG does that beautifully.

However, an LG sounds like more like a 60's Fender, and an LM sounds more like a 70's Fender. Neither is going to really do what the other does, but both do what they do wonderfully.

I believe what Peter (and I) are saying is that, at home, solo, the LG seems to have quite a bit of pop up top. That's what can really disappear in a mix (it isn't what those basses are about). The LM can sound a bit over the top and harsh (as many ash/maple basses do) in a solo setting, but once you get them in the mix, that aggressive upper mid grind can actually still be heard.

So again.... just depends what you are looking for, not 'better or worse'. You will not be able to make one sound like the other (that's why I have and love both models), although you will have an easier time (IMO and IME) taming the LM than you will 'grinding up' the LG.

Get an RA and be done with it...
the more I gig my RA the more I dig how she just sits perfectly in that pocket between the LM and the LG...

That's yet another nice voicing, with that unusual alder/70's spacing thing... warmer and less aggressive than the LM, sizzlier and more 'alive' than the LG. Not my thing, but very nice in its own way!

I really dig the slap tone with the RA's.... SUPER sizzle up top, and a bit of built in compression in the low end from the alder body (I assume).

Well put. I would say though, that while I agree with your statement about 'taming' the LM, it still won't achieve that mid range magic of a good alder/rosewood.
Of course, if it did, you would not have both ;>).

Edit: Sort of like your clip with the Sadowsky/RH vs Sadowsky/F1...both work and you can approximate the F1 to be 'RH like' but the Sadowsky/RH has a greater than the sum of it's parts magic to it IMO.

+1... they both sound like they do. I agree, it is as impossible to dial in that aggressive LM grind and big low end to the LG as it is to dial in that low mid warmth and sweet top end of the LG with the LM... just different beasts.

I guess my point was that I can pretty easily remove that aggressive grind of my LM on certain tunes to sound more mellow and fat and organic with the passive tone control. However, pumping up the upper mids or the treble with the LG in no way mimic's the top end of the LM. I agree though, you could say the same thing about the low mids of the LG... you can't really get that growl and warm punch out of an ash instrument with that bridge pickup closer to the bridge. +1

On a side note, that's why I REALLY like my Sadowsky ash/maple/singles with 60's position (almost the opposite of the RA spec).... grindy, aggressive, bright... but, you can low mid burp the heck out of it (although I sure wouldn't call it warm and organic... so again, different!). I guess that is a spec Jimmy doesn't do since there is no 'Fender' heritage to that particular combination (that I know of)... but man, does that work on a gig, and it 'sits between the LG and LM' spec in a much better place (grindy but also growly) IMO than the alder/maple/70's RA spec (wide, sizzly, warm) for my personal tone goals.

For me, the gods of tone lurk in the mid-range, but I sure wish I owned an LG and an LM. :bassist:

+1 I love having both. I just put a video clip up of my Sadowsky (described above), and you can kind of hear what I'm talking about (it will come up if you click on my YouTube Channel link in my sig)... it doesn't have the 'Fender type' vintage-like tone of the A-C's (which is why I like them so much), but there is a certain beauty (especially in a mix) of having both the aggressive grind, quickness and aggressiveness of ash/maple, with the ability to 'growl and burp' a bit more than a 70's spec'd instrument when favoring the bridge pickup.

Kind of fun to compare that tone to the LG and LM through the same rigs in the other clips IMO.

And hey... that's why I own all three:D

So my LG5 is alder/rosewood poly finish with an Old Growth Honduran board, the LM I am ordering, you can see the mock up on the previous page, ash/maple it will be butterscotch blonde with blocks and binding as well as a 1 piece maple neck.

I am not really planning on selling my LG5, although I've said many times that I am hoping to stick with 2 basses and when the LM5 arrives I will have 3. I can't tell you how many people when I've brought this discussion up have asked for "dibs" on the LG5. I think the list is about 6 people long so far, I really haven't kept track but Andrew Jones was the first to inquire, so if I ever do sell it I will offer it to him first and then I may have to put it up for auction...

Ken and others have said a lot about the differences in the LG and LM or 60s vs. 70s specs. When I mentioned the LG not cutting it it was specific to the band, style of music, room, audience, my rig and my preferences that day, not to mention the age and type of strings. I've played 100 gigs with the LG and some times it kills and sometimes I stuggle to be pleased. I don't think it has a lot to do with the LG per sa but rather all the outside factors that weigh into the situation.
