& Jonno1707 I AM CERTAINLY NOT after that 'EMG loaded modern sound' :-) & as far as Modulus' go -I've only heard what Flea's done on one to know what they're like. No, as far as 'modern' goes - I Am really meaning something that will be able to 'bite' if I dial that in... & the Active treble sounds like it'll do that IF I need it.

Hi Rod,

Just to give you a better idea of how will sound a EUT5 , please review the links below...Of course the mine has a East indian Rosewood board and 60´s position but the sounds that my primavera wood body can give me are wonderful ( primavera will sound like a mix between swamp ash and Mahogany)...The mine is below the 9 pounds... I never play a LG5 or LM5 but the acoustic sound of my EUT5 is amazing.... I can´t imagine a better Jazz Bass type of sound in a other 5 strings bass. Go with Alleva Coppolo Basses.

The two first links are me at a bass clinic in Colombia...sorry I please for the drums contamined sound.. The two first FB videos are using a little Phil jones Briefcase combo plus a pair of effects as part of my clinic.
The last is a customer that come from another latin america country to test my bass.

I had my basses set up

lg5 low rider ss
lm5 hi beams

for the heck of it I swapped them a few days ago. The low riders on the lm give more of an upper mid grunt that is more pleasing finger style but less pleasing to slap. They seem to bring the lm closer to a nickel feel. I don't think I love the pairing but thought I'd share my findings.

I did however come across an interesting point that the lm with a 4 to 6 db boost at 500hz gets the bass a lot closer to the lg and conversely cutting 4 to 6 db at 500 hz on the lg gets me a lot closer to the lm.

With the preamp set flat on both basses and the same amplifier settings the lg appears to be significantly louder then the lm until you cut or boost 500hz at the amp.

I don't want to speculate if the lm is s loped or the lg is mid heavy I guess that all depends on your perspective.

I'd guess you guys with more experience then me have already figured most of this out.

+1... the wood combined with the pickup placement gives these bass spec's their classic 60's versus 70's type tone:

LG/60's..... round low end, nice push/growl in the low mids, and a polite upper mid response (no grind) that results in a bit of space between the treble and mids... sweet, airy top end

LM/70's... big, extended low end, polite low mids (not much growl), accentuated upper mids (lots of grind).. that results in there being very little space between that upper mid grind and treble response... grindy brightness.

The DR Lo Rider steels will magnify that upper mid grind with the LM, making it sound very ganky and 'old school' (especially in passive mode). The DR HI Beams (which have a hole a mile wide in the upper mids) moves the LM to be a bit more polite and airy up top. The DR Lo Rider Nickels just SIT on that wonderful lo mid growl of the LG to my ear, and still provide that nice sweet, airy top end.

Nice stuff... you can kind of hear this in my old iComposition clips comparing the LM and LG.

you both have at one time owned an RA in addition. Since that isolates it from an lm only by the body wood. How much do you attribut to that difference? Vs fingboard and pickup spacing?

I know that's the million dollar question but jonno specifically said that's the way he hears ash vs alder which makes me a little more curious on your thought

Wow--round, push, growl, polite, grind, airy, sweet, grindy, *ganky*--Ken, you're inventing a whole new lexicon of bass tone vocabulary! (we really need to measure the tones associated with these terms.) What's ganky mean? Great sounding word.

I try to post a lot of clips to anchor all my descriptions.... I think that helps put all the 'blah blah blah' into context! (or so I've been told!).

'Gank' (which I think is 'my term'... but who knows) is that upper mid 800hz-1Khz upper mid..well... 'gank', that is key to a classic 70's J Bass tone, but that can sound a bit harsh and rough when played solo. Many bass heads (TecAmp, Markbass, etc.) have the upper mid control centered in this area for quick 'smoothing' of the tone.

Edit: My best '70's Gank' clip is the FBass VF5 I owned for a short while. There is a clip on my iComposition site. That bass (70's spec) really had the vintage 70's thing going on, and I had DR Lo Rider Steels on it when I did the clip... really brings out that grindy, ganky aggressiveness that sounds so good in a mix if you are playin' the funk. TBer Shelly owns that bass now, and is killin' it!

I have a pretty good clip of my previously owned RA on my iComposition site also (link is in my profile). The RA, to my ears, is (not surprisingly) a blend of the LM and LG. However, for my tastes, it lost that 'thing' that made a 60's J a '60's J' and a '70's J' a 70's J. It had the round low end (by that I mean a bit attenuated versus the big low end of the LM) of the LG, but none of the lower mid growl (I assume that is the combination of Alder and 70's pickup position). And, it had a super amount of upper treble sizzle, but very little grind (I assume due to the combination of 70's pickup position with a maple board, but with an alder body).

GREAT sounding instrument... more like a 'modern LG' than anything to do with an LM tone.
