I went back to the Hi Beams on the LM5, trying the low Rider Stainless was a fun experiement but I am happy to be back.

Did a rehearsal last night with the LM5 and my Countryman DI, into a A&H Zed board and a large stack of powered JBLs (212 and 118) on either side. Added a little at 500hz and removed some bass (not sure of the center point on that board), The bass tone was great.

Going to try to do as many gigs and rehearsals without an amp as PAs will allow.

Galore my tool to set the saddles were in the front zipper compartiment of my gigbag.
Its quite small so better check your gigbag
If provided by Jimmy.

Unfortunately there is no key in my bag. I was surprised to see how hard it is to find such a small key, even bigger suppliers don't have these sizes, so I just got one from ebay.

I e-mailed Jimmy about that but he didn't respond and that's not the first time. I know he has a billion of orders but when you pay that much for an instrument, you'd expect to get all information you need. Otherwise he seems like a nice guy, obviously very busy, so all the best to him. Oh and the bass is amazing to play, top notch!

Hey guys....as many of you remember...I recently purchased a black PG from Jimmy for my LG5. Ive decided to put it up for sale.

Heres the link....Just a heads up!

So you have one already? If not pm me and I will send you one or two.... For the Hipshot B-style bridge saddles, right?

Yeah, I was gonna' offer the same thing until he said he already got one from ebay. I figure he's already committed to the purchase so it's too late.

@Vic..i know man! i mean i like it...but NOT enough to keep the TORT off..The rubber chicken thing sounds scray. I wont make that mistake again. HAHA!

I might Trading the black for a more Reddish Tort. more period correct "look" It might POP more. just not sure. still comtemptlating that idea.

would you pull the rubber chicken out on that one? :-/

Hey Vic thanks for offer, but I already bought that one from ebay. Will see next week if it's the right one :smug: Thanks again!
If it's not, seriously, PM me. I've got a bunch of these things... as long as the postal cost doesn't make it illogical compared to some other option, anyway.

LM5 update -

Running 10% bass boost at all times...

I'm liking a 4 or 5db boost at 500 hz playing fingerstyle, it removes the slight scoop and brings the notes out front. Pulling back on that for slapping, it sounds great with just a slight bass boost. The mid boost is particularly interesting when I favor one pickup and makes it significantly more difinitive. I guess this is also a function of the amp I use and would vary if I changed that end of things. Running the bass through my countryman directly into the board I'm settling on a 2 to 3 db 500hz boost since I don't have the luxury of adjusting that on the fly.

At 10.75lbs I can certainly notice the weight difference but it hasn't been a problem at gigs or long rehearsals.

I can TOTALLY see the attraction to the "Sadowsky Will Lee preamp" that would just make this combination perfect..

As a side note while the blocks, binding, skunk stripe and trans finish are well done they are a total waste of money. I really only care about what the bass sounds like and how it feels. Not a big deal but that's how I'm feeling.

The LM being my 3rd AC I really have grown to appreciate the inline 5 headstock, especially when I need to do a quick tune up on a dark stage. I really like the look of the string retainer and always HATED the double button retainers (ala Fender 5s) but in reality I've played with strings quite a bit out of the gate and dropping a used set back onto the bass can be a little challenging with the ends all wound up. Maybe the double buttons aren't the worst idea in the world.

I'm very happy with the bass but since the LG5 is still in my basement, I can't help but A/B them regularly and wonder if getting rid of it is the best idea. In any case I still plan to.

Hopefully getting over to Bass Doublers soon so he can try the LM and I can catch up with my ole KBP5 which I never should have sold. I did get a great DB in return but it doesn't mean I can't miss her dearly...

congrats on ending up being happy with the bass. :bassist:

i know what you mean on the options. they look cool, but with all the builders, kick the price up a ton. when i ordered my new nordy a went with the cheapest i could do in terms of specs. between that bass and the 70's vf5 i picked up used, i came out substantially under 5 grand for both basses. if i wasnt a musician, i would have ordered that nordstrand in nitro, brazilian board and binding:D

Thankfully I don't live off a full time musicians wages, the bad side is I don't have a full time musicians chops. All that being said if I keep this bass for a long time I guess I will be happy to have done the cosmetic upgrades.

A brazilion board would be totally worth it to me because it adds to the tone and feel, although at least on Jimmy's basses the east Indian is getting lots of props. I'm not sure with these thin coats of poly being used today that nitro makes a huge difference but if you hold onto the bass for many years it certainly adds to the vibe...

This being the first bass I ever waited a year plus for and spec'd out every detail, in addition to my name being printed on the the neck plate. I have a certain alegance to this bass that I haven't had with other basses, it probably makes me less objective then I otherwise have been in the past.

I've always strived to have a bass that sounds 100% the way I want it to without any help from the EQ on the amp. It is a fault on my part and somehow makes me feel like the LM is just a touch from perfection. I need to get over it..

musician wages suck...lol! i keep threatening to quit and start selling insurance. :smug: the brazillian does have a certain feel that is definitely pretty cool. it wasnt make or break on the 5 since i have the 62 jazz with the brazillian board.

im kind of the same way with instruments and im not a "get over it" kind of guy. i know exactly what i want, and if youll build it, we can do business. you know when someone is really taking you serious or not. the narrow neck nordy came out perfect thankfully.

with what youve described about the tone of that bass, i guarantee a different set of pickups with a different wind would get you there 100%. mind you, i dont build basses, so you can take it with a grain of salt, but i spent a ton of time evaluating pickups and what tonal attributes are coming from wood and whats the inherent voicing and frequency response in a set of pickups. if it was me and i had that much invested in an axe, whats another couple hundred bucks on a different set of pickups ya know?

i held on to my fodera for waaaay too long because of the "i ordered it and waited and picked out all the specs" thing. i never played it. luckily fodera kept raising their prices and i was able to make money on that sale!

I am just not well versed enough to start playing with pickups at this point, I'm not opposed to a few hundred bucks here or there. You seem to be the expert I will have to comb through some of your old posts.

There is something less natural about dialing it in on the EQ rather then it just being there. In any case I am VERY happy with the bass, I just need that little bit to be perfect.

Any pickup recommendations I'm all ears.

the inherent voicing vs eq was the exact conversation i had with jimmy. ill use a word ed friedland used when describing the sound of the mia 75 ri jazz. strident. his observation was that the ri was a little more strident than marcus' sound. i went through an epic amount of pickups in that bass before going with a lower wind duncan antiquity. those pickups in 70's fenders werent that hot. strident is what i hear in jimmy's pickups. regardless of bass model. the guy i sold the ri to still raves about that bass.

jimmy seems very tied into what he wants to do philosophically and not too quick to stray from it which is perfectly fine if you happen to love what he hears in his head. that can also be tough from a builders standpoint because id say the majority of customers dont know what the hell they want or how to articulate it.

i went through telling him what i needed one time, and he said something to the effect of its still just bass and if you put a cheap microphone in front of aretha, itll still sound like her. my response was that if thats the case then im not going to give a stupid amount of money because ill just go buy a marcus miller 5 since ill still sound like me anyway. at this level of money, i want EXACTLY what i want. if im going to settle or get over something, ill do it with a cheaper bass.

if you wanted to stay in house, you could ask him if hed wind you a set with plain enamel and not as hot. a more affordable alternative would be to have careys shop make you a set. his standard wind hes using in his 70's basses is more open and "marcus'y" than what jimmy is putting his basses. that coupled with the heavy body and finished board on your bass should put over the top.

I've long ago given up trying to spec my own basses. You can get 2 basses from the same manufacturer... same weight, wood, electronics... everything, and they can sound quite different.

Wood is difficult... sometimes it doesn't do what you want it to do. Sometimes you get very lucky, sometimes you don't. Hopefully, this bass will work for you, but you sound like me about 2 days before dumping an instrument that doesn't work for me (i.e., 'it sounds great with some EQ, maybe some different strings or pickups will make it perfect, and my multiple posts trying to convince myself that it is OK:smug:). Been there, done that (my buddy Vic has me pegged... he can tell with the first post whether I'm going to keep a bass or not... the ba***rd.:D

No shame in spec'ing something out that didn't completely work. Like Narud, I spec'd my dream Fodera and kept it way too long because... well... it was a Fodera. Luckily, like my buddy Narud, I ended up making money on it after 6 years or so:hyper:

Anyway, I'm sure your bass is awesome, but man, if it doesn't speak to you, cut your losses and try something else.

While I haven't purchased an instrument in a while, I had to churn through a few Sadowsky's and even sold one A-C that didn't work for me. No shame in that!

id agree with cutting your losses if the bass didnt sound like what you expect or want acoustically. that experience i had with the 75ri really taught me alot. and prior to that, i thought i had it figured out.:hiding:

the thing sounded bright and snappy acoustically, but EVERY set of pickups i put in there sounded super grindy and not like my 78. i knew from the acoustic sound that it had to be in the guts. it took buying a set of 70 jazz pickups and putting them in that bass to figure it out.
