Thought you guys would like to see some custom stuff. I was talking with Jimmy today and he sent some pics of a custom pickup cover that he made today for Hugh Mcdonalds kbp5.
Hugh has a pro relationship with Seymour Duncan pickups and has a custom pickup to his spec...so to be true, Jimmy did a custom cover so the shorter stock Duncan pickup will fit in his bass. Here are some pics shown below just prior to complete finishing.

The first AC I played was a P appx 10 yrs ago at NAMM. It was the only instrument that weekend that kept haunting me for months to come. I have a KBP5 now and love it. IMO he makes the best P out there, period, save for a few great Fenders of course. In saying that, most of the ones I've dug and my own are more of the 60's vibe. And the B's sound great, not too big, they fit right in to the P thing. Somewhere back there I posted a link with a few tunes I used it on. Good luck!

Couldn't agree with you more dude....I have a very hard time choosing between my 60's Fenders and my KBP5....and I usually end up with the KBP5....
I think I might go back to trying rounds on my KBP5. Any suggestions on what strings to give a whirl?

Every time I try rounds on mine, I'm back to flats immediately after the following gig....it's just meant to be bro let them be happy haha

I have used flats on mine on a session that i did.. Kept them on for a while ... but put rounds back on it for gigging.. Rounds with the DN fingerboard make a nice rock sound.. I like XL170s on mine... Dont really dig SS string on it... so i stick with nickles.
Just sent mine back to jimmy to have medium fret wire put in.. i have been using mandolin fret-wire for years and just want to try something new for fun for a gig that is forthcoming

Try Jimmy's SS strings. The first set I had on my LG was amazing. I can't believe how long they lasted. They were the usual super bright SS's in the beginning, but as soon as that was over (nothing a little PTC can't fix), they went through this REALLY LONG period of "perfect sweetness and sizzle". I have some more of his strings that I haven't put on yet, and I hope they're exactly the same (when I got my bass, he wasn't 100.00% sure what strings were on it, but when I spoke to him last about buying the strings I have now, he seemed pretty sure these are the same).

Like Kirk, I really dig the DA XL170's.
Having said that, I played Vic's LG5 strung with Jimmy's SS's, and switched to those. I like them too. They don't give up much in the midrange like many SS strings do.

Agreed Chef...
I found some brands of SS on the KBP5 seems to create a bit of a mid scoop sensation...JImmys work pretty well thou.. i like the throatiness the nickles give me on this bass... its more vocal in a way .
Im trying some different SS strings out for jimmy right now... and what he has currently seems to be better....
Im looking forward to the different fret-wire when i get it back... I love the mandolin frets i have been using for years for its preciseness and great attack... but want to try a different feel for a year or so.. lets see how it goes.

XL-170's are my default string, I probably have a dozen sets sitting around here LOL. That is what I have on my LG5 and my Ken Smith as well.
I'll have to check out Jimmy's strings, I'll pick some up from his website.

I used to use Sadowsky's actually until I discovered TIs....I've also used Jimmy's nickel rounds, and while they're one of my favorite roundwounds, I always find myself back with the TIs....

In an effort to prepare for my trip to Mitch's (Bassdoubler) today. I put a set of TIs on my LM5 over the weekend

hell yeah Pete....it was great seeing you and those LG and LM basses are NASTYYYY....but the LM5 w/ flats really made my day....that fatter neck is crazyyyy
Mitch's Epifani 2x15 cabinet is ridiculous. Super articulate for a 15 loaded cabinet and his playing is phenominal.
In any case I thought the LM5 really shined through the IAMP Pro and Epifani 2x15. I am so glad that the KBP5 is getting used as much as it is. He's beating the heck out of it and it looks and sounds as good as ever. The deep switch on the Pro is absolutely insane with the 2x15 and KBP5, a sound that wouldn't work for 95% of guys but if you remember Mitch's studio clip a month or so ago you can imagine how this fits perfectly.
It is amazing how much bite the flats have in the upper range on the LM, it sounds very different then what one might expect from a 70s bass with flats. I understand the 70s spec screams for a nice SS set but man it is something.
One of the cooler settings is favoring the neck pickup, rolling off the tone completely and boosting the treble about 50%, standard 10% bass boost, it has a very slightly overdriven tubey kind of P bass growl. Limited use type of thing but very cool.
The rear pickup growl is still there and sounds killer and many of the highs that you may think would disappear while slapping with flats is suprisingly still there in a new and interesting way.
I don't think the LM5 will wear flats for ever but they are suprisingly interesting to say the least.

I sent my kbp5 Dalbergia Neck to jimmy for a refret... I have a tour coming up and want to move to different size frets.. Here is my neck on the bench after re-truing, frets just pressed in....
Ive been using mandolin frets for years and years but going to a slightly wider fret on the P5 for now...

Jimmy sent this to me to day. It is my LG5 in sanding... Sebnems nephew is doing the work.
Think Im going go with Sonic Blue... Yep, another Sonic Blue with Dalbegia Fingerboard maybe Block inlays... To match the Sonic Blue "Poudah" kbp4 bass..
I have a video somewhere online of Jimmy cutting this body with me annoying the heck out of him.. We did assemble it in raw form and played it.. well its finally getting to sanding.. Not long now.
