I need to post new pics of my kbp4. The guy that techs for me when im on the road put a few nice dings in it... then i picked up the pace from just plain hard use...
But I would not have it any other way..

Your TIs.. How is the Low B..
I have been using Chromes on my P5 but use a RW low B ( a trick i picked up from Tommy Wolk - RIP) since the Chromes Low B is a little to thuddy for my taste.
I was saying the other day that I feel like Im being held up at gunpoint if i were to lay down the cash for the TIs. wehwww $$$$$

Anyway, the point is, as long as the bass is great and is of great quality, I really don't care much about 'in-house' versus not in house. My Sadowsky is about as perfect as a bass can get IMO.

This is different than what I was talking about and also what I as thinking Kirk was referring to. What Roger does is very closely coupled with his business and he is very involved in the process. I was making the (possibly bad) assumption Kirk was literally talking about Jimmy buying "off the shelf" stuff from Warmoth or something and representing it as his work.

I may have posted prematurely. :)

dude I have TIs on EVERY ONE of my basses. They are my favorite flats, and favorite strings period. The B is super fat and full sounding and is perfectly balanced with the rest of the set. I've also tried doing all flats w/ a round B, and vice versa having all rounds with a flat G....I just always come back to all TI flats....well worth the $$ I had a set on my '69 P-bass for 11 years until the G just unraveled....haha....I used to have chromes on my old jazz bass....they're ok but the TIs are so much more musical it just makes you want to play....

IMHO, that's unbelievably bad. I know people that work in machine shops (even own them) and they've always been given "migration tools" if the technology changed... and those tools were always free, as a sales tool to attract the owner to purchase the upgrade/update.

But it doesn't end there, the vacuum, the cutting table, the air compressor - he had to get so many parts that cost THOUSANDS just to get it where it is now... Which is still a couple steps away from actual production. Then at that point, he has to take time to learn to program the thing which takes away from production... As you said, I'm sure he wouldn't refuse a sale if someone wanted the older body and after it is progammed into the machine then it's cake. But his focus right now is the evolution of the design which is the wider body.


I love the guy but I'd hate to be him right now.

Yeah, I have a lot of respect and appreciation for Jimmy, but I think it's obvious some bad business decisions were made... at least from a timing perspective.

Kirk first: thanks for your " inside information" based on your good relationship with Jimmy!

When i ordered my LG 5 in March this year i asked Jimmy for a lightweight bass , less than 9 pounds would be great!
After a while Jimmy told me that he just got in some alder that is light so he would be putting a spread aside for my bass.

Man i lost it, is your next bass a LG or LM ?
I remeber seeing a You Tube video of you in de atelier of Jimmy cutting the wood and testing it with a random neck!
Especially the B had a killer sound ( clip with the censored beeps when you were cursing :D )

Kirk as you love lightweight basses also what are yur thoughts on " chambered bodies" ? I tend to think it will affect the sound in a negative way?

I like my basses to be under 9 pounds.. I went to the shop and selected my wood.. I know others that have specificly ordered a light bass and he will do his best to find the right piece. and you will most likely be suprized, in a good way.
Remember the NYC 5 strings basses were slightly larger than a 4 string jazz bass.. by about 1/8" on each side of the body. give or take...

He is currently making me a slightly scaled down version body for my next bass. cut here and a cut there

Does anyone on Long Island have an LG5 I could check out?

I just talked to Jimmy and I'm thinking pretty seriously about ordering one. I've never played and LG though so it would be a complete leap of faith. I really want a uber 60's 5 string in my collection though and these sound like they fit that niche.

Also, what do they usually weigh in at? Jimmy said he could keep it on the lighter side -- but I've become sooo used to my 8LBS Sadowskys, I don't think I'd be happy with anything much heavier.

Hey Joel,

Peter Palmieri lives in Babylon, he's got a real nice LG5, also
jonno is not too far from the Tappan Zee Bridge, its always a great hang by jonno's place, he'g got a lot of cool gear and a smokin hot LG5 with a rare Dalbergia Negra (old growth Brazilian Rosewood)...:cool:

Anytime Joel, just let me know....Send me a PM and we'll work out a date/time...

I notice recently a lot of people are asking about weight and it should be made clear that the LM with an ash body is really the only heavy bass Jimmy makes. I believe on the LG, RA and KBPs Jimmy likes a nice light alder.

I don't know the weight of my LG but it must be well under 9 lbs. as is Mitch's KBP5.
