@FatBeams, I still have the set I got at NAMM I've been afraid to try due to posts at TB similar to Tom and Ken's. :D Meh, I'll still use them, but at this point, I'm not going to be expecting to dig them all that much.

I could be wrong here (can't quite remember), but I think that company makes the Sadowsky strings. If so, the steels are very high tension, very big sounding, and VERY aggressive in the upper mids... kind of like Lo Rider Steels on steroids. They can sound ugly solo, but are wonderful in a busy mix.

The R. Cocco branded strings might sound quite different from the Sadowsky, but most string companies kind of 'have a voice' to their offerings that transfers over to their OEM customers.

This makes sense...doesn't sound like something I'd be interested in. I may try the Lo Riders again at some point after my LM5 ships out. I'm also interested in hearing what Jimmy's SS strings sound like. Other than that, I still love my Hi Beams!

I also very much like Jimmy's SS's. Assuming he's still having them made by the same peeps.

That bass is so fat and warm by nature...and, i really like the little more top end his ss strings have. They're not at all over-bright or ganky after a brief break in period.

+1 Chef... I normally use Nickels (Lo-Rider specifically) for everything and don't like SS at all... But the A-C's were the first that I actually liked, more than the A-C Nickels I might add.

I actually prefer the low rider ss on my lm over hi beams. Just a tad more stiffness and some additional mid content.

Well my LM 5 actually came loaded with R COCO SS strings.

The sound of the strings, like I mentioned earlier, were very pleasing to me both slap and finger tone apps. Full, quick attack/response and a smooth rich eveness in all registers.

In fact, I was awaiting 3 sets of SS COCO's when I received my very first order/sets of Lo Rider Nickels. So on went the LO Riders. At first I was put off by the tension and had to make numerous bridge and truss rod adjustments. ( I've used the Sunbeam Nickels for 6 years ). Then I took the LM to a bass hang at a local music store ( thanks Dan and yes your RA 5 is indeed a BABE ! ) and after being ravavged by the players in attendance the LM came home and sounded and played just fine--welll actually--- awesome. :hyper:

The COCO SS strings arrived last week and I haven't got up the nerve to put them on-you know--- kinda " if it aint broke thing" ......

I gave a set to my best friend who just acquired a CAOJ LG 5 last week and he too has not put them on his LG--yet.

I guess what I am saying (again) is that I liked the sound of the SS strings that first came on my LM --and they were NOT DR SS strings --but rather R. COCO strings--sounded great but playability not too good for me as I can only get through STELLA in the original key as a ballad--- with the SS strings I find ?:hmm:

Too, the R COCO strings are a bit more expensive than the DR's according to my resources.

OK I'll throw this out..What about THOMASTIK strings ?? :hmm:--weird gauging but the set I tried- flatwounds- on a 63 Jazz was just shy of a religious experience. :cool: :D:D

I've only tried them on a fretless, but I'm a firm believer in them myself. Yeah, the gauges feel kinda' strange at first, but I read an article that that, plus their metal purity, are the reason for the "matched" tension from string to string, as well as their fairly high price.

I've never tried a set on a fretted, but I definitely will at some point.

BUYER BEWARE.. SICKER SHOCK.These are arguably the most expensvce strings out there. I"ve seen the nickel 5 string sets for aboiut a whopping $80 per set on these shores--about 2 times the price of a set of DR's.

I know ELIXIR strings are up there too in price and is it MAXIMA GOLD or something also ???--but I think this is getting out of the realm of tried and true good sounding/playing valued strings--- for mere mortals and the masses.

I too, likely will get around to trying a set.........of THOMASTIK nickels as they make a very fine double bass set for years for both arco and pizz playing and they make their own strings--in house--gotta like that...:):)

All true.

Can't find the article right now, but it was actually really interesting, and the jazz flats I had seemed to last forever, as well has having a lot more "life" to them than I figured I'd get from a flat. Very very nice strings.

Ohhh, MAN, just a little clarification here - you mentioned:

"... after being ravaged by the players in attendance . . ."

believe me - your LM did definitely NOT get beat up by the other basses - your bass DEFINITELY stood it's ground and exceeded the other basses in some ways - your LM is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!

I'd like to try some Thomastik flats one day- as ALL the 'press' on 'em is unbelievable, but So far I've stuck to Chromes on my P style basses, I DID try some Fender Flats & Labellas but chromes have been my faves so far.

Will get around to some T.I.'s one day tho.

Must try these Turkish 'delights' You guys mention too. These are the A.C. branded string yes?
