+1 Reasonably transparent, but the buffering moves the LG to a bit more of a modern thing. Nice also, but passive on the LG... that's the thing IMO. However, as you can hear on the clip I just put up, about 75% of that classic 60's growl still comes through with Jimmy's pre set flat if you dial down that passive tone control a bit. Pretty close to passive with a bigger low end... nothing wrong with that!

LM..... 10% bass boost in active mode, and there you go for that late 70's active J thing.... perfect!

Well my LM will be going off to paint on Monday and I was originally thinking 3 tone burst/black guard BUT I am now reconsidering and leaning towards having it done to look just like my 78 Jazz bass which is Oly white or close to Ivory/black guard what do you guys think?

Yep blocks and binding and having him match the vintage tint on the neck and fret board

+1 While the buffering and slightly boosting the bass EQ can make a 70's style bass (like the LM) sound great (i.e., move it a touch more into Marcus Miller land), that same thing seems to be a bit of a mismatch with a 60's style instrument. Not a lot of history or logic behind 'supercharging' a 60's style alder/RW bass.

As you can hear from all my clips, and others' clips, and of course, your own experience, the LG with the preamp in but set 'neutral' sounds GREAT.... but it moves that bass away from what most would consider a classic 60's tone.

Passive LG tone is the bomb IMO and IME! Not really my thing, as I've always enjoyed the somewhat juiced 70's thing, but it is very cool to have a 5 string bass that really vibes a 1965 Fender!

+1 on all points.

Preamp engaged, not as "faithful", but also my preference, though I do definitely, and probably more than any other bass I own, love the passive tone on my LG.

My LG has actually been a catalyst for a couple different opinion shifts for me. I never used to dig the 60's tone as much until I got the LG, and I never used to like the passive tone as much until I got the LG. Every time I pick that bass up, it's just so "alive" in so many ways. It's completely addicting. I literally can not get a sound out of it I don't love. I can't. No matter what I do with any control. I love that about it.

I think you should give me your 78 jazz. Failing that, my choice would be the olympic white/ivory with a tort guard. The black looks nice too.

You know my answer already, BUT, to be honest, as you know, you can't go wrong either way. Maybe order both and switch as your mood changes from year to year.

+1 I don't dig tort much with that finish and a RW board... to much dark and brown and virtually no contrast. However, with your maple board... yeah buddy... tort will look awesome.
