Post from a guy on TB who played it recently... said it was very lightweight for a 70's J. He said he was quite suprised.
Which probably means 11 lbs
For his sake, I hope not. Who knows though... only basing that on one persons relatively recent post who got to spend some time with Marcus's bass.And my point to Tom7 was basically agreeing with Joe in a way from our previous discussions... the extremely heavy J's I've owned and played did sound a bit different, but it was not in the way you would think... more compression down low, and a more immediate attack... less airy, more ganky. Not my thing, and quite frankly, not how I really hear Marcus's tone in general.

haha...seriously. lightweight for a 70's j is like 10 pound range. 10 pounds of northern ash is all you need baby!

Still have the Surf Green LG5/DN ... the white one is pending (out for paint I think).
is the white one the deal we pm'd about before or was that the surf green bass? im confused

The Surf Green one is the origional one I wrote you about. The problems leading to a rebuild were/are fit and finish related.
I discovered thru trial and much error the correct setup for me on this bass, and I now find that I cannot put it down. There are faster/smaller necks with lower action out there, but there is just something about Jimmy's stuff that dials in when you work with it, and then you're hooked!
Hmm think something is screwed up with my KBP5. The volume pot goes to zero volume after turning it about 5-10 percent. Also tone seems kind of fuzzy now to me. Maybe time for a trip to the shop!

You really do ... I'm seriously thinking about selling my Fodera slot, buying a companion LM and callin it a day.
Unless that heavy bass is spec'd identically to your other 5 strings, I would be VERY careful attributing all the tonal difference to the weight. Remember, Marcus's 70's J relatively lightweight
Spoke to Marcus Miller in person at North Sea Jazz Festival in The Hague last year( July 2010).
I noticed that he has a similar Fender as the one he always plays ( Natural body , maple neck with blocks). He told me he bought it from some guy who nearly played it.
So i am not sure which of the 2 Fender Jazz Basses you refer to. I thinks they are both 1973? Not sure.
But it seems the 1973 Jazz Basses with maple necks are lightweight and dig the Miller sound.
+1 ... thanks man. Just took a few mistakes on the setup to clear up (if those pickups weren't so stubborn to move...).
It's really odd too ... I get most of my practice in on my 16mm spaced Hohner (fine by me, smokin little bass for practice), but when I go to the LG I actually feel/play better on that now. Just the opposite of my initial reaction.

When was your Fender Jazz Bass built?
I bought the bass in either late 1976 or early 1977. I would guess February '77. I'm not sure whether the bass was manufactured in '76 or '77.
The serial number is S732742
What modifications have you made to your Jazz Bass?
I have a pre-amp installed in my Jazz - a Bartollini installed by Roger Sadowsky. Roger also installed a Bad-ass bridge.
The rest of the bass is stock.
Why did you have your frets narrowed?
Don't remember why I had my frets narrowed. Roger Sadowsky told me Will Lee had done it, so I figured I try them out. Didn't really notice a difference. I've since gone back to regular size frets.
Do you boost any bass or treble on your bass or is it flat?
On my bass I use 2% bass boost, and 2% percent treble cut. Or maybe it's 1%, I don't know, the knobs don't have any numbers. Don't turn the bass boost up too high, unless you have a fondness for mud. And don't turn the treble up too much unless you like that funny feeling in your teeth.
