Also ( player not withstanding ) JACO gets a heck of a tone out of that fretless without a pickguard.

I thought my statement allowed for the fact JACO is a stand alone player in the bass world.

OK not to be contentious by any means but curious where AC TBers are on the following ????

1. Does a Matt Garrison Model FODERA sound any difference with the ramp ( ebony board under pickups ) or does it solely facilitate right hand dexterity and speed ?

2. Does an IBANEZ Gary Willis 5 model sound any different between ramp on or off ?

3. Whether any of you play arco/legit double bass OR NOT do you suppose there is any difference between the sound of the same instrument played with a French ( cello style grip a la Christian Mc Bride ) or a German bow ( gamba style a la Paul Chambers ) ??

Please send this one too and I`ll review her too along with the shark fin ( be careful that one is recently illegal here and in CA I think ? ) and don`t be surprised if I don`t send it back cuz it certainly is more rare than ye ole tortoise guards in these parts, and likely a lot more purdier.:smug::smug:

OK fellas I am out..to practice, record, write and deal with club owners...nuff pickin and guard-en stuff for me at this point. ;);)

By the way the bass was a 2005 Fender Jazz Custom Classic 5 alder body, maple board that I had made this discovery on whilst doing a very challenging theatre musical world premiere, and the tone w/out pickguard was VERY discernable to ALL as superior to the tone with the pickguard on....closed :mad::mad:

My next AC will definitely have a single ply pickguard.

edit: attatched with 2 sided tape to reduce compression.

I have a '59 CS P which came with the anodized metal PG. I put a ply PG on for kicks and it sure seemed like it took away some of the ping. Of course it may have been the amount of various IPA's drooled onto the strings by that point.

Yeah definitely a timbral difference for me between German and French grip. Eventually I chose to go with French.
