It was heavy. Yes....and it sounded great... When we started filming the meet your maker stuff and doing photos, we actually picked out 2 sets of ash planks for my lm4-- one heavy, one fairly light, with the idea that we would compare them at the end of the build.. I ended up favoring one bass and we kind of forgot about that... But... The all-white bass from BPL was my 2nd choice--- and mine isn't painted and we are still working on the neck... If it can get done before the white one finds a home. We may be able to do a weight:tone comparison...

Sorry Mike X, as we had this conversation about the LG working better overall than the LM for you on your last recording and at that time I agreed.

Hey its all good, Thats kinda funny how u had them confused. To me BIG DADDY is still my LG5.

BTW to any of you KBP fans out there...I had considered trading my KBP4 Classic Supreme sometime back. I think the time to consider an outright sale is on the verge. Please drop me a line if anyone is interested. I plan on taking some detailed pics. Shes easily an 8.5 - 9 on aesthetics and condition! Heres a quick pic that many of you have already seen.

Wow, that looks amazing! Does that have more "sparkle" in it than usual or is it just the nature of the shot/room lights that's bringing it out more?

I'd have to see both in person... sometimes the way a photo is taken can really distort the truth in how significant certain things are.

I saw it in person. It didn't appear as sparkly as it does in these pictures....just a killer CAOJ!

CAOJ looks better than I thought it would with pearl blocks. I totally dig it with a maple neck and black blocks but wasn't sure I'd like this version.

It looks pretty smoking' though to me.

I actually dig that sparkly thing -- whether it's actually in the paint or just in the photo. Cool looking bass.

There was indeed a little bit extra sparkle in there... I believe a layer of gold sparkle was applied under the orange... A little different than the usual CAOJ... More like SAOJ (Sparkling Apple Orange Juice).

My own personal preference is that I haven't seen many basses with a maple board and matching headstock that I like CAOJ included. Seems to flow better in my mind with maple board flowing into the headstock.

Jimmy feels the same way in general Pete... He didn't say anything about this bass but I remember there was a beautiful Mustard Metallic kinda color w/ matching headstock that went to Japan and Jimmy didn't like it but it was ordered by the dealer that way.

I've only seen Kirk's blue LG (with the original maple board), a CAR, the Mustard and this CAOJ... And to me they look good, but I also dig the plain maple board/headstock look.

Years ago I tried a single ply vs a 3 ply and the tone quality difference was VERY measurable--in favor of the singly ply.

The bass just opened up and sang more with the singly ply I had found. I am a fan of the singly ply--when you can get them. So is this a single ply guard--kinda looks so in this "sparkly" pic ?????

The guard on the CAOJ bass is not a single-ply, it's 3-ply but just not beveled... Jimmy asked me if he should bevel it but I thought it looked cool that way and so did he.

As for the tonal difference between 1 and 3 ply, that's all you Lionel!

Why wouldn`t a singly layer of plastic not vibrate, or allow more wood vibrations of a bass body than 3 laminates ?

Fender used single ply bakelite on the first mid 50`s Strat guitars, and ash body and age not withstanding, those guitars are ultra serious tone monsters.

I AM NOT SAYING EVERY STRAT with a single ply guard is going to sound better than a STRAT with a tortoise/laminate guard BUT the same guitar will sound different with the 2 different guards, I am certain.

Does a laminate bodied upright resonate as much as a wooden bass generally-especially with a bow ??? Perhaps not always discernable by playing solely pizz but there is a difference in a lam body versus a carved ( wooden) body when played arco (bow).

Also ( player not withstanding ) JACO gets a heck of a tone out of that fretless without a pickguard.

MANY high end makers of basses eschew pickguards. Ken Smith, MTD, TOBIAS, SPECTOR, MODULUS, WARWICK, FODERA, PEDULLA and ALEMBIC to name a few.

Of course a few of the above makers may have models w/guards but they are usually FENDER copies, aren`t they ?

Well, FWIW, I have tried it, many times, and never noticed a difference... same bass, single, multi, and even with the guard off.

As a stretch, maybe if the guard was completely bonded to the top of the instrument, but most, if not all, instrument builders and luthiers will say that thinner topwoods are cosmetic only and have no appreciable tonal impact. I would consider pickguards to be in this same functional family... at best.

And FWIW, I simply can't accept Jaco as an example in a discussion about pickguards and their potential tonal effects. I've seen him play both the bass of doom as well as other basses, including other Fenders with guards (including even a franken-Fender) and he still sounds... well... just like Jaco.

HOWEVER... that said, if you can tell the diff, more power to you and rock the heck out of whatever you like best. Just never been my experience that guards have had any appreciable impact on tone.
