I like it a lot. I love the look of covers but I do find the make it harder than I'd like for my right hand. YMMV though.

+1...I wish I could get used to playing with them because I LOVE the look. But my thumb placement floats all around that neck pickup so I can't make it work. I also have trouble with the transition between finger style and slap. But guys like Marcus Miller obviously have no problem at all with it.

I absolutely love the look and feel on my 77 Jazz bass but they never seem to feel right on 5's....:-( They do look cool...

I agree with Joel, I wish Jimmy would manufacture the ones that were made by Atelier back in the day, the large PU cover makes it tough on the right hand with a 21 fret instrument, but works great on my 72 jazz bass with 20 frets, the narrower ones would sell like crazy if he ever decided to make a few.... Just Saying

They work great, you still get the benefit of striking your palm on the cover to achieve a particular slap style and feel, and still be able to move your right hand around the pickup area....

I think it looks great! My computer makes the color a transparent Plum, is that what it is? Large pickup cover, if any.

This is an Atelier cover. I think I'm going to do without, hand adjustment would take some time to get use to.

Any opinions on in ear monitors? At my church we have the universal Westone UM2's for everyone, but I've going to order some customs soon for better fit. I've done some basic research, but there isn't much out there from bass players - most of the reviews are from people on the head-fi.org website that are audiophiles, but not musicians.

I've narrowed my options down to these companies:

I'm using UE11pro for working gig... great!! both UE's and JH's is good to me.

Well, this could be counterpoint to your question, but I tried a set of those livewire triples, custom molds, and while they may or may not be as good as the ones you list above, the were almost "too accurate" for me. The UM2's seem to have a much richer bass response IMHO, and I went back to them. I also found that, while it takes a little longer to get them seated, I found the memory foam to be even more comfy than the custom molds.

I'm going to give customs another shot, however, because I know all the top pros use them, so maybe I just didn't get a good impression (make sure to use the jaw trick!), or maybe those LW's are simply much better for non-bass (vox, guitar, keyz, etc).

Anyway, I'll be watching your subthread... PM me with anything not posted... I do want to revisit this.

I've read the same thing about Livewire Trips - an have also read that the Livewire Duals actually have better bass response than the Trips even though there are two drivers as opposed to three.

I've heard nothing but great things about UE's and JH's. A couple drummers I play with swear by the UE11 Pro's. I guess I'm trying to determine how well the less expensive (and less known) brands like 1964 Ears, Alclair/Livewire, etc. compare to those.

Yes, but quad drivers is preferred if budget allowed.

I use the UE7s and love them... i was told when i got them that for drums and bass... this is all you need... getting into the ue upper numbers is really for a singer or md that needs to hear every tiny detail.. they are great! but obviously more expensive... depends what your needs are.

1964 trips are the way to go for drums and bass. Two low drivers with a crossover and a high driver. Great customer service and a very small company. From what I've heard, they are the only company that uses the exact same parts as westone. If you can afford westone, cool, but these are pretty much westones for a fraction of the cost.

That's good to hear...the 1964 Trips are basically at the top of my list at the moment. I was trying to decide if it would be worth it to go with the Quads vs. the Trips. i have the quads and they COMPLETELY rock! i had westones duals and they dont even come close. I never thought they sounded thin before but after comparing them, it wasnt even close. 1964 quads are worth every penny!!
