Can't wait Ace! It's not often that I'm on the edge of my seat for a TB buddy. I'm sorry the CAOJ thing didn't work out like originally planned, but the wait is well worth it.

I'm even sorrier than you!..........I needed this bass SO bad for SO long......I have completley overhauled my gear and the last piece to arrive will be this bass the only bass in my stable now is my new MTD that sounds totally different than the AC will....it's very sharp, and modern sounding and I have been fiending to play a bass with an old school vibe since I sold my trusty Fender......at this point, I'm glad that I stuck with the CAOJ considering that I don't see it around very much...it'll make it that much more special.......all I need to do is to decide if I want to go with this new bridge right now or not....it's pretty expensive, but I know it would be worth it.......this bass couldn't come soon enough.......Also, I;m scared to death of it shipping in a GIG BAG!!! I really wish he had hardcases.....it dosen't seem right to ship a $5000 bass in a gigbag that's not better than my Incase.....still, you guys had no problem with shipping, although AJ's RA being left at his doorstep frightens me.....I live in Washington, DC and there are more thieves and crooks in this city than just the ones on Capitol Hill..........

Just make sure to ask Jimmy to ship with a 'signature required'.

Can you ship it to someone who you know will be home?
I've shipped and received so many basses in gigbags that it just doesn't phase me anymore. The only issue I ever had was with shipping a hollow-body, and I'm not sure it would have survived in a hardcase either.
I will most likely be home when it gets here.......All of my rehearsals/gigs will be in the evenings and UPS always delivers to my house by 1:00PM...........I will probably order a case for it from G&G....no way am I storing it in the gig bag with two small kids running around........
Having a bass shipped can be nerve wracking--even with a hardcase. My major concern is probably loss. Other than that, I'm pretty confident with a gig bag surrounded by peanuts or bubble wrap.
I personally love Gig Bags and I've received both an F Bass, and a Nordstrand Nordy on Gig bags. They were well packed and arrived without incident.
What is the AC Gig Bag like? The Nordy and F Bass gig bags are the most heavily padded bags I've ever owned. I REALLY love them! I wonder how the AC Gig Bag compares?

It's pretty much an average gig bag with the added benefit that it is waterproof. It works well for me taking it to a gig in the back of my SUV with other gear bass gear but if I'm taking any of the drummers kit I keep it in the back seat. It's certainly no substitue for a hard case. I can't comment on shipping in the bag as Jimmy was out when he shipped mine and it came in an ancient fender case and the bag shipped later.

My CS Fender Jazz just returned from Iraq and there were no issues! I'm really happy, since I was worried that the nitro finish would get screwed up because of the temp. changes. We pulled it off a flat-bed truck today in 20degree weather...I was a little nervous.
I let her warm up slowly over the course of the day and then tuned her up.
Can anyone explain how nitro gets messed up due to rapid temp. changes? I'd like to know because my LG5 is my first all nitro'd out bass, and I want to make sure it stays looking great as long as possible.
My AC got here in the bag just fine, inside a box PACKED with P-nuts. I like the fact that Jimmy is focused on one thing, making his basses. I don't know if he's going to expand his operation to meet the big demand, and then expand into things like cases, cables, amps, and extras. If he does, it's cool but I'm just happy to know that my LG5 got handmade by the man and it was lovingly crafted by less than 5 people.

Finish cracking due to temperature happens when the wood expands or contracts at a different rate than the finish does. When you take out a cold bass and bring it into a hot room the bass starts expanding. Since the finish and bass are made of different materials they expand at different rates. If the finish is brittle like nitro is it will crack. Other finishes respond differently due to their brittleness and thickness. When a bass warms up slowly its not a problem as there is not as big of a temperature gradient between the finish and the bass so it can expand slowly without cracking. Make sense?

Spoke with Jimmy yesterday, but now I am having a change of heart. We settled on an LG5, but today for some reason I am second guessing and am possibly thinking RA5. Can anyone describe the tone difference?
Why are you suddenly considering the RA5? What considerations lead you and Jimmy to settle on the LG5? I would trust Jimmy from all I've seen and heard. What specs did you decide on for the LG5? Nitro or Poly? Hipshot bridge or Jimmy's bent plate vintage bridge? What color?
First of all you will be happy with either. I have the LM5. I would think Jimmy was trying to get what sound you were trying to achieve. But follow your gut feeling. I feel the way he makes the LM and RA's are the way they should have been made in that era and the LG's are the way they sounded in the 60's. But that does not help much does it. To me the RA and LM don't really sound like 70 or 80 fenders. They are closer to the 60's with some of the characteristics of the 70's. The back pickup I think adds some punch to it. But to me they are very close. The back pu as you probably know is about or close to 3/4 of an inch closer to the bridge compared to the 60's fenders or LG's. I say follow your gut feeling. It got you this far.

Well I of course haven't decided what I am after, so that doesn't help. Perhaps I should wait until I more confident in what I am looking for besides a passive sounding active bass that sounds like the best fender ever. You know, you just get that strange feeling when you are about to drop that amount of money on a bass heheh.
My LG5 would be nitro, sonic blue, matching headstock, parchment pickguard, vintage tone, hipshot bridge, default rosewood board I think.
As far as RA5, I'm thinking it is right in the middle between LM5 and LG5. My Ken Smith has the 70s pickup spacing, but that is so far from fender. I had a Marcus Miller 4 string that I enjoyed for a short time. Otherwise all of the jazz basses I have played or owned have been 60s spacing. I think I might like the added bite of the 70s spacing, as long as it retains some warmth.
I love that setup! That's what my old Nordy had that I still miss dearly...
Andrew's LG5 is a beauty as well.
I very nearly went with this combo myself.
Simple answer and the confusing one.

RA with rosewood fretboard MOP blocks and binding? Be the First?
If you want just a "Little" more bite the LG with maple seems like the first steps tonally are that way. Just a thought.
