I've never run into a boutique 5 string J that felt so much like a really old instrument. Jimmy's unique low radius 5 string fretboard, use of OLD wood in his build, and his more traditional 'hand made' sort of vibe makes his basses feel totally different from the wonderful, exacting CNC's sort of perfection of, for example, the Sadowsky basses (which I also love for what they are).
+1, I currently own or owned so many boutique J basses, Sadowsky, Fodera, Lakland, Lull and AC, etc, Jimmy basses still regards the best old sounding and feeling J to me, if you are after the best old j bass in 5 string with active preamp package, you just can't go wrong with Jimmy's offering, of course, KBP is the a good P as well, I still regrets I sold mine few years ago.
For those who feel doubt with what AC basses charge and "rather spend 5k for a Fender CS". I can simply tell you I will do so and purchase one in heartbeat if Fender really offers what Jimmy did but only they don't.
My 2 cents...
