Man that bass sounds killer... And it's still my dream colour combo. Just like yours Kirk. Ive spent a bit of time checking out your tour photos on your website. Some great shots. I guess your bass sounds much the same at Pauls? Lucky man!
Yeah my identical bass like Paul's gets another hug tonight.
Why it was only 3 weeks ago when I gave it its first big hug after seeing Snarky Puppy ( Mike League ) with the amazing Layla Hathaway. Of course he was playing an LG 5 too.
Those LG 5's man can really sit in a track, can't they ?
However the tone Paul gets in this video is noticeably clearer and more growly than at least my LG 5, and even Mike League's tone in aforementioned video.
I think Paul has an Aguilar OB-3 pre-amp shop installed by Jimmy on his LG 5.
The white binding sticks out too

Do you think it's the Aguliar pre that's giving the growl (which is love) or is it likely yo be his DI/signal chain etc? Hard to know I guess, and there's not much opportunity to hear one of these in the flesh over here in Australia.

Mine'll Hey growly like that. New rounds wound strings. Dig in with bridge pup favored. I dunno re the Aggy pre, the times I've used Aggy pre's they were more clean. But that may've been my playing.

To my understanding and if my memory serves me correct, Paul always run his LG5 passive actually.

Thats correct...Mostly passive.. 98% of the time.. He told me he has the Alleva Pre back in one of his basses... But you kno ... its not so much the pre anyway.. Its in the way he plays.. Its in his hands and attack,,,

Kirk, that's how I found jimmy actually. I read an article about Paul putting Jimmy's pre in his '78 jazz bass and I was looking for a pre to put in mine. Realized he was in NYC and the rest is history!
Hmmm good to know. I guess when I eventually get one I'll explore the passive side of things and right hand technique. Totally worth it as I love Paul's tone!

Oh yes.. I remember jimmy doing that pre install.. I have photos of it somewhere while in the NYC shop... I try to post...
IMO, while the A-C pre is simply amazing with the LM models (70's ash/maple), I never used the preamp on the LG I had... sounded better passive IMO, if you were actually going for the more traditional 60's J sort of thing.
Never bypassed the pre with the LM, never engaged it with the LG.

I put flats on my LG4 for the first time. They sound good but waiting for them to break in a little. I usually play this bass in passive mode but spent 30 minutes late night playing with it in active with a slight bass and treble boosts. I've never had an passive with active electronics that has sounded so "natural" (other than an Vic Bailey Fender jazz) than my Allevas.

I just returned from Houston,TX..Jimmy asked if I could could deliver this bass to the Make-A-Wish event, for a young man Freddy that has brain cancer.
I told him it would be an honor.
I took a few photos in my hotel room that i will post later, as well as this short video that i recorded on my phone.
Freddy is a HUGE fan of bass player/Alleva player Mike X.. Mike, Freddy and I hung out and had great time!
