I had good intentions to take new photos of my A-C family this weekend, but with my wife being 6 months pregnant and being smack in the middle of a kitchen remodel....well...the old pics will have to suffice...

LG5 - Honduran RW board poly finish

KBP5 - DN board nitro finish

BTW - not sure why only links came up and no photos?

Normally, I'd not really be into the painted duco kinda' thing, but man, that is a GREAT finish, and the white lettering on the headstock just really looks SO nice IMHO. I LOVE that!

Nope. CAR is a metallic finish. Typically, CAR is a gold base with a candy/clear red coat, hence the name, but I think anymore it's generally used to refer to any metallic red finish.

That looks more like almost a fiesta red or something along those lines. Some kinda duco finish. Maybe Ducati red? :D

How would you rate/compare the AC vs the JO?

I will start by saying that my JO seems to be by far and above the best one I've ever played, meaning comparing it to other USA JOs this one just sounds and feels very special. I'd say darn near as close to as good as any pre CBS jazz I've ever touched.

That being said it took me a few years and allot of lost money (buying and selling basses) to find a 5 string version of my JO that I am actually comfortable with. Construction wise I am hard pressed to say one is better then the other, they're both pretty darn awesome. Feel wise I must say the unfinished quartersawn neck on the JO is it, nothing better. That being said the poly finish on my LG took some getting used to and the nitro finish on the KBP needs cleaning fairly often. They are very comfortable now.

I was very sceptical about getting an active bass but Jimmy pretty much nails it, passive sound active electronics. A little bass boost comes in handy at times as well, something that is hard for me to live without.

The mid bight or growl is a little higher in the mid frequency spectrum on the LG then the JO, I prefer the fingerstyle tone of the JO and the slap tone of the LG. My LG with a honduran board is a little more modern and bright then many have described their's. In fact while I love nickels especially on my JO they just didn't work out on the LG and I'm very happy using Hi Beams.

That probably confuses the issue more then clears it up.....I'd say the JO is the best passive 4 string J I've played and owned and the LG5 is the best 5 string J I've played or owned.

With all of that I'll admit I haven't done a gig with the JO since Thanksgiving when I got my LG5. I've been toying with a KBP5 DN and nitro love the bass still not sure a P bass suits me well...

EDIT - I should note the JO is 10 years old and I've pretty much played it everyday for the last 5 years. I've probably got 400 gigs on that bass and almost as many dings...She's well broken in my A-Cs are still spankin' new!

My belief and experience is , given the modern thin poly that most luthiers use today, I can't believe there would be a significant different in the tone of a bass based purely on the finish.

My LM is poly and my LG is Nitro. I must admit, there is an organic look to the Nitro finish that really is something (especially Jimmy's Nitro finishes), but I always suggest that guys go with the Poly, so you don't have to baby the finish, etc.

Jimmy's Nitro finishes seem very durable, but the Poly finish is pretty much care-free, and it looks great also.

I wouldn't 'not' buy a used Alleva because it was Nitro, but if I was spec'ing one out, I'd go Poly. I guess the only exception for me is if you were going ALL THE WAY vintage, and really wanted an Alleva was as close as you can get to an old Fender. So, in that case, I'd go with a 4 string LG with the bent plate bridge, nitro finish, and some sort of Brazilian board.

Other than that, it would be stock bridge, stock poly finish, stock board (maple or Indian RW), and you would be very happy IMO!
