I am pretty sure the difference in tone is; first the type and thickness of the rosewood and second the pickup and how it was wound and possibly the density of the body not sure though since that's not visible in anyway.

I can say that my JOs sound has matured and openned up over time also, I know there is some debate as to if this is voodoo or not but I believe my A-Cs will do the same...

Oh yeah finishes...The nitro has a mojo maybe just in my head in any case I don't have the slightest idea if it effects the tone.

+1 on the Nitro mojo. Man, I take that LG out of the case, and it almost glows... like it's alive. I love my poly LM, and it's my main gigging bass, but it's 'just a bass'. That Nitro LG feels like it grew out of the ground or something. Amazing mojo and vibe per you comment above. I can see why there is so much more 'love' for the pre CBS thing than later Fenders (at least from a 'vintage' sort of history vibe).

I prefer satin over poly on necks, as if my palms start to moisten a little, my hand seems to catch more on poly, but it's all preference I say. :)

When you say "satin" I'm thinking about the finish on my ex-Roscoe neck. (the only finish I know by sight and feel is Poly, as I'm not real experienced in finishes) Or are you asking comparo. between the Nitro vs. Poly Jimmy offers? If that's what you're curious about, I love the feel of Nitro on my LG5!

A little bit of confusion here. Satin is a finish texture, poly is a finish compound. You can have satin nitro, tho it usually wears shiny pretty quickly because of its relative softness, so typically most satin finishes are poly (for its durability).

Thanks for the clarification, it was the Warmoth description that confused me. It makes it sound like you can only have satin finish with nitro:

Satin Finish
Our Satin finish is a nitrocellulose lacquer; highly sought after by vintage guitar purists. It has no gloss or shiny look to it; the appearance is dull or matte. This is a more functional type finish which is appreciated by some for its faster, slicker feel.

Yeah, I can see how their language didn't help you on that. It's not true tho. It's just like with house paint, you can have satin, semi-gloss, or gloss paint all in the same type of paint.

+1 I love the satin poly and the glossy Nitro finish that Jimmy uses, and the gloss Poly is fine with me too (like the Celinder Update). The only neck finish I don't particularly care for myself is the 'satin Nitro', like on the Sadowsky, which can get a bit sticky and gummy, even after years of gigging (minor issue IME).

The gloss Nitro neck finish that Jimmy uses is really cool, and really feels like a really old Fender that has never been played. Very nice, and again, it really fits the LG model if you are really going for that classic 60's vintage sort of feel and look IMO.

I was coming around to that way of thinking, but after seeing the pictures on this new thread of all the Alleva's with the guards 'as they were designed', the sunburst without guard just looks strange to me. The guards look SO good on these basses, and that cut-out to me is awesome looking. It really sets these basses apart to me. I totally, completely dig the look, and it becomes even more clear when you put the 'no guard' bass in context with all these beauties spec'd the way Jimmy envisions his basses. I guess maybe if it had some super ash grain or something (I do like some of the more modern looking ash trans finish LM's without guards), but I just don't really get it with alder LG myself.

Pure personal taste and totally unimportant obviously, and it obviously looks OK the way it is!
