Ash/maple all the way... an LM with a gloss neck finish will totally do the trick IMO!

It was beautiful
While the neck is a little wider than my sadowsky/lakland/valenti, this is not bad, and I'll only notice that in an a/b situation. It feels great.
Kinda like a Sadowsky, hearing it at home does not equal what it sounds like in the mix. It had plenty of top end with the DA nickels that were on it, and in fact I cut passive tone some.
Sonically, it's warm, fat, hefty, punchy. While it's nice to be able to add some bass boost when biasing to the bridge pickup, you sure don't have to.
I played with the preamp some, and found I just really didn't need it-last night anyway.
Just v/v bias, and a little passive cut.

Excellent! While I run the LM and RA wide open, with a touch of bass boost (maybe 10% on occasion), I too roll back the passive tone a bit on the LG, which is the 'sweet spot' to my ear with that particular voicing. That eliminates the click and allows that beautiful warmth and growl to come through! It also just sounds amazing with the neck pickup dialed down a smidge... that 60's rear pickup 'bark' with the neck pickup still providing some fatness, and very little hum. Dig it a lot!

I do find the DA nickles to work well on the LG..like you said warm and punchy... works in a mix well too... But I have used Hi Beams too for an extra treat at times. and I really liked them alot... Some may find the Hi beams too aggressive on an LG perhaps... But i love to experiment .. I think there are so many variables, that by tweaking one little thing here or there a new palette can be found ...
talking of experimenting....I have given Jimmy a curve ball and seeing if it is able to be done.. or better yet if he is willing do it, since what im thinking is a complete basstard-ization..
A light alder body J Body 5 String with dual P5 pups. sort of like a lee sklar thing only with P5s in traditional 60s J spacing... may work and may not... im thinking it will though.. Debating on all rev P or traditional at this time...

Hi Ken! yes that bass did sing for me... it traveled alot of miles the past 2 years...
The LGs do sound great once you get that sweet spot. and what i like is that sweet spot is consistent.... i love consistency!

Lets see if Jimmy lets me get it... he is very tru to tradition.... must be the Italian in him.. lol... What am i saying , he is all Italian.. im only part..
Im thinking of going Poly on it this time.. He does a great Black poly.. like my p5 . it looks like a piano , and it is real thin just like nitro... also thinking of a one piece maple neck , like the old 70s with a skunk stripe up the back.
whatever the final configuration will be.. it should at least be usable to someone on this planet.. even if it would be an expensive canoe paddle.

Sweet. Try some flats on it for fun. I have an old set of flats that I put on for a week or so when swapping the normal rounds. Those with the walkabout make for some old school thump.

BTW..and FYI... just to add to the history... that was the last of the left over Nitro from the fender days that Jimmys painter had.. you wont see another authentic Inca Silver like that again... That was the paint and the painter from that era.. dead on ballzz accurate as they say.

Man all this talk sure makes me want to play Ken's LG just to see the difference...
Another very suprising gig night for me last evening. Had a happy hour gig at a very large local club last night, that has a notoriously high hollow stage. I've honestly always had significant issues getting my sound right on this stage. I'vfe tried every bass and amp combination, an amp stand, gramma pad you name it.
This was my 11 piece band and it's a crazy place hunderds of people packed out at happy hour...So I decided to pull out the KBP5 with Jamerson flats for the last set. Bam there you go it just works. I am such a J bass guy and so not into flat wounds that it's hard to grasp but this bass just comes alive in a live setting. Especially pulling out the old school motown, Stevie stuff.
Very wierd mixed feelings, I am so drawn to the KBP5 and every time I play it on a gig I am more impressed.

I think you should put a set of flats on the J. So you know clearly what is the P and what are the flats.
