Right back atcha, buddy. I'm absolutely in love with my oly white nitro LG-5 but I feel this strange yearning, a pulsating, throbbing desire, almost a hunger, when I look at those photos of your orange bass. Hmm, I guess I could flip my black Sadowsky 5-24...but it's such a fine instrument. Wouldn't it be nice to have LG-5s in oly white, ice blue *and* orange? This attitude may be out of touch with current economic indicators...but what's a better long-term investment than an A-C?
With respect to hum with the single coils: I've been running active with the neck pickup backed off maybe 20%, low boost up about the same, and no noticeable hum except very minor with headphones soloed in a recording environment. Furthermore, I get a tone you can eat with a knife and fork. Good night. That is all.

I spoke to Jimmy about that when he was about to move to LA
Anyway he stated Celinder does and they are about 100 dollars. I am hoping Jimmy will come out with that soon. I saw a few of those "thong" type PU Guard on a few Alleva's. I rather have the fender type.
Keep in mind Jimmys Pu's are longer. The standard will not fit. That is why Jimmy was having a tough time with it cause they would have to be a special order. But try celinder.
I loved it, but decided the LG was a better fit for me, so that's what I have on order right now. I'll have to wait until '09 for my first AC, but I'm sure it'll be worth it.

Thanks, but it's really a team effort in this thread.........lots of useful info being shared by all........I had to make a tough decision to get the RA, but in no way do I regret it (that STILL doesen't mean that I don't miss that 535 sometimes.....).....Glad to see you're back around and keep us posted on the future build........

What am I saying I sold my 535 also. I totally respect Mike Tobias as he is one of the greats. He is a little pissed at me so we have not talked in years. Sensitive guy but a great builder. Makes a great product.
Jimmy is new and has a different way of thinking. No matter what you order it will not be a modern sounding or feel to the bass. Thats his way of thinking. Thats also the reason why we buy his basses. But the modern type sound of the 535 is great.
You also notice that every bass made, there is, or they advertise what to do with the bass to get a fender sound. No matter how you turn the Alleva's controls it will sound like or toward a vintage sounding FENDER.
It took me about a year to make my LM5 sound the way I want it. String height, and mostly the exact PU height. A slight turn and its a different bass. Amazing instrument.
Glad to see everyone is really enjoying there Alleva's. I hope Jimmy is doing well and I always thought he should have stayed in New York. But I wish him the very best. Hey I also look at it this way. The AC's are growing in popularity and I have one of his earlier NY models.
Pretty straight up config, really. Sunburst, standard rosewood, tho selected for darkness, full preamp with passive tone, and a tort guard. About the only thing different about it vs other LG's is it'll have the poly finish. I want that added durability, and I prefer a satin finish on the neck.Congratulations. Sounds like a sweet bass you cant go wrong with Jimmy's 3TSB it is amazing and even better in person...

The tone is killer...but for some reason the lights on stage at church just don't like single coils one bit. The hum is crazy nasty with any bass I put through there when everyone is quiet. In the mix it gets so loud during fast songs that the hum isn't noticeable. Lovin' my AC, though.
I will say that this bass sounds the best of any bass I've played through our Aviom in ear system. Pure tone.
This is real typical especially if the lights are on controllers with dimmers such as DMX systems. Sometimes when we play smaller stages, we can't have our lights turned up all the way so instead of flashing around from full on to off, they go from off to dimmed on. That's when I notice it most. Again tho, only between songs, never during, so that's why I put a tuner pedal in line. It doubles as a handy mute for vol-vol basses.
You can convert these to vol-blend, but it will alter the tone as it loads the pickups against each other more than a vol-vol config does. I've never directly A/B'd two basses identical except for that difference, so I can't categorize the difference, but it's a known fact. I THINK someone once told me the high end suffers a little, but I'm not sure.

Have any of you guys heard an AC with the Aguilar 3 band preamp? If so, how does the tone differ?
I'm ordering mine with the AC pickups and preamp but I was just wondering about the Aguilar preamp. I know that Paul Turner has one in his LG5 but I really don't hear a difference. Maybe I'm missing something.

Hey man ... FYI: Jimmy swapped out the Aguilar 3 band in Paul's bass for an AC pre-amp about a year ago. I've used the Aguilar 3 band in an AC before. It sounds great, but didn't work for me with the AC. The difference lies in how you like your EQ. I'm a fan of both pre amps, but i've stuck with Jimmy's because it seems to provide me with more booty. As a former mid range control freak, i've grown so attached to tone of the EQ of the AC pre, that I've learned to let go & dial in my mids from my amp. My wood combo of choice is almost always Alder/Rosewood. Maybe the 3 band would work better with maple/ash? I'm not sure. Good Luck.

Thanks for the word, Jason. It will be my first time in awhile without a midrange knob but with his basses I'm cool with that. My friend's LM5 kicks butt live with the AC preamp.

Paul had the Aguilar 3 band removed from his Coppolo last year, and now has Jimmy's own 2 band unit in his bass

i couldnt imagine one without an ac preamp. i bought an ac and ag outboard pre to check out with my vintage fenders. the ag got boxed back minutes later. unless the 3 band is voiced radically different than the 2 band ag pre, jimmy's pre is the winner hands down. that thing sounds damn good with the 62 and the 78
Do you get that buzz when the gain is matched on the two pickups, or only when they're not set the same? I'll bet I'll find rooms that make mine go crazy, too, but so far I've been having good luck. Too bad your regular playing room gives you that buzz. Maybe you can have them rewire the place for you. After all, you *are* the bass player
