Club Alleva Coppolo (Part VI)

Alright AC experts. We know that this is a LG5. Anyone know what the specs may be just by gazing at it? Or perhaps it once was a TB'ers old bass?

I contacted the Lowend, and they seemed to be unclear on the specs of the bass. (Poly or Nitro finish.)

According to the 2009 AC pricelist, there would be a significant difference in used price if it was Poly or Nitro finished bass.

Any info appreciated.

I am going to go out on a limb and speculate.. i always have a 50% chance of being correct:)..

If that is Inca Silver (looks like INCA Silver on my monitor) and made in 2008 or earlier i would suspect it is Nitro...
and it appears to have a matching headstock but the photo has glare so it is hard to tell... there is no way that i could ever tell what type or RW the fingerboard from a photo...i am not an expert.... and it most likely is Alder body...

Looks almost like Nate Watts bass but Nates bass has the older placement of the output jack which was closer to the endpin like my old LG.. and he has a Badass bridge...

All of the headstocks were smaller, the tuners were larger, and the p basses got the traditional style bridge. I had one of these early kpb4's and the nut width on mine was that of a jazz bass. Not sure about this one. This was also before Jimmy started winding his own pickups, so i'm guessing that this one has a seymour duncan in it.

and how was your old AC work with the seymour duncan?

Jimmy started winding P bass pickups much later than he did jazz bass pickups ... I don't think that the P pickups started until 2006 ...
I got rid of my early kpb4 because i couldn't find a pickup that I liked for it. If you buy this bass, i would recommend replacing the pickup with one from Jimmy. You'll have to contact him for a price.

In reguard to the Inca Silver LG5, I agree with Kirk that it is Nitro.
I'm more positive than not that only the Nitro painter does Inca silver.
I agree with Sean that you should get the serial # from the Lowend folks & call Jimmy directly. He keeps a log of all instruments built & he'll be able to tell you the correct specs of the bass.

Thanks for the idea. I will send Jimmy an email to ask him for the pricing.

actually I am planning to get one in the coming future, but I have a tight budget. I can only got a used one or basic or standard model of a new one.

so, in my mind, I am struggling to get this used one in lowend, or order a new one from Jimmy.

I would like to hear you guys ideas and opinions.

Of all the guys here, I am the last one you should listen to. I've just had an Alleva Coppolo for a few weeks and am still getting to know her. With that as a preface...

If you get a used one, I'd definitely try to get it with Jimmy's pickups. I'm sure the other pickups are great too 'cause Jimmy chose 'em, but ultimately he chose to do his own so he could have something he was completely satisfied with.

I had a chance to get my Alleva Coppolo with a 3rd party preamp, and didn't and am very glad. The other preamp might have been great, but Jimmy's just seems just right for this bass. I couldn't imagine trading out the pickups either. I've got an Alleva Coppolo, and I have an authentic Coppolo experience through and through with it, and that is very satisfiying to me.

I can confirm that, at least as of today, Jimmy does not currently offer strap locks as an option. The customer has to supply them, or put them on after receipt.

FYI, since there seemed to be some confusion about at least the current state of that.

Save your money and get one, if your a traditional J bass kinda of guy. I've only had mine since November but I am so happy with my LG. Make sure you read this entire thread and the previous great info on how different options sound and feel...

These are standard on Ken Smith, MTD, Fodera, Sadowsky, FBass... you name it. Now that they have the dual use models that look almost exactly like a vintage strap button, I see no reason not to include them, at least as an option.

I've been using these for about 15 years now, and never had a problem. Totally secure IME.

They are easy to swap out, so no big deal. I just hate taking a screwdriver to a brand new bass right out of the box, but that's exactly what I did with my Alleva's.

Apparently Jimmy had a similar experience, hence part of the reason for his decision.

Thing is, the only times I've heard of this happening is when folks don't get them snapped in all the way, or if the ends on the strap are so horribly worn out they can't do their job. I've been using these locks for over 20 years on MANY basses and have never had a single incident.

The other thing I like about them is, they tend to swivel a bit easier than a typical leather strap does on buttons... especially the ones designed to pinch the strap, so the tendency to loosen button screws and mess up the screw holes is reduced. This is only the Dunlops tho. The Schallers (which I don't like) don't seem to help much in this area.

IMHO/IME anyhoo.

I have been using the dunlops since perhaps the late 1970s or whenever they came out.. The past 20 years or so they are in the shape of a regular button which is great since you can use it without the lock in a pinch..
The Schallers are horrible in my opinion... I noticed everyone that i know that has a MAC computer uses the Schallers .. :)

But the Schallers are held on with a spinning nut.. If you dont constantly tighten that nut, the nut falls off and the strap slips off the cupping gravity "U" and the bass goes to the floor.. I have seen that happen more than once over the past 20 years..

The Dunlops rule... I have about 3 straps. All of them are the new sadowsky ones fitted with Dunlops.. I basically leave them on my basses that i rotate. and never come off... I hope now that i made a claim of no accidents one doesnt happen :eek:.
I feel confident im OK though with these things.

The Schallers where a PITA b/c of the nut and I almost dropped my bass on more than one occasion. No issues with the Dunlops.

Yeah, and as I mentioned before, I do think the Schallers were worse about turning the button and causing screw hole problems... I'm convinced it's because they rotate around the outside perimeter instead of the inside. I believe that makes a noticeable difference.

I put a set of DR Sunbeams on my RA-5 yesterday.
The D'addario strings that came on the bass were OK
but the B string kinda sucked.
Anyway...the Subeams sound GREAT!!

Seems like a good time to bump post another pic of my baby.:hyper:
