I really dug the Labella's on that bass. I'm gonna get me a set for my P at home and give 'em a go. IMO they matched up quite well with Petes' new bass.
They certainly don't look and feel like my high beams or nickels (45 65 85 100 125), so I guess to some degree, but I also had guts on my upright for a time and these aren't that monstrous.
I think I've confirmed these as the Labella Jamerson set, the windings are red at both ends....
I would like to nail that down for certain the original owner George said he found the original wrappers for them. It would be nice to get a second confirm based on the windings. I am having a hard time thiniking these are super high tension though. I guess when I'm home I can make a direct comparison.
I agree with, Peter. The flats I have on my Fender now are much higher tension than these. These seem much more comfy to me.
I thought the strings had a little too much twang for flats on my KBP-5. I bought them as they were the only flats I could find locally while I waited for some Sadowsky flats I had purchased to be replaced. I'd had a set of chromes on a Dingwall and I liked the tone on it, but those were the only flats I could get for the Dingwall. After playing the Sadowsky and Labella flats I also didn't like the feel or the tension of the chromes. The only good thing I can say about the chromes on my KBP-5 was that after a couple of weeks I took a set of Labellas off my LG-5 and replaced them with hi-beams. It was the first set of rounds I've played in a couple of years and I liked the change so much I've had hi-beams on the LG since.

The Jamerson set is 52 73 95 110 a I guess the labella flat B is 129.
I should have asked if you play upright. Do you know obligato's? thats the upright string that's like TI flats. In terms of tension and sound.

Thing is, I've never considered that to be BS, so your comment doesn't come as the least bit of a surprise. At least for me anyway. I've ALWAYS been more impressed with an instrument in person. ALWAYS.

Contrast that to celebrities whose photos always somehow seem to look so much better than they look in real life, that when you see a celebrity in real life, you sometimes question that you are really seeing him or her.
On the other hand though, I have encountered basses (and other gear) that were so hyped that my expectations were raised near the roof... setting me up for disappointment when I finally got the bass in person. Consequently, I like to wait a few months before I allow an opinion about a bass to solidify.
Speaking of opinions after a few months, I coincidentally happen to be listening to recordings of my "Heartbreaker" made by Jason Langley, it's previous owner. In a few minutes I intend to log off of here and give her a whirl. The longer I own this bass, the more I really love it.

Yeah, and especially at the high end, that's why people ask so much how can we buy such expensive stuff without playing it first, and the price of potentially having to pay round trip shipping for something just to find out it doesn't fit you (the eval period). It's just the way it works. The good news is, at the high end, you hit more than you miss, so it's relatively low risk... especially with AC's.
Now I am officially jealous bro. I would love to try an alleva..I have never played one but really want one!!
I am not a P bass guy either. I guess if I'm gonna jump in and try it out this is as good of a bass to try it out with... I do a gig with allot of Motown and 70s P bass funkalicious stuff so it might just work for me on occassion. I am sceptical about having flats too but I am going to give them a try....
BTW way more excited about being a Dad!My Father in Law is a sax player and my wifes a flute player so I'll be fighting for my little bass player......

I got my Booker King about an hour ago and stopped playing long enough to say ya'll ain't ready for this....I think Jimmy is really on to something with this wood combination....Ash Body and Ash neck....clear as a bell and percussive as he77...more to come but suffice it to say this is an unbelievable bass!!

Round 2 of the KBP-5 tonight. Bringing the LG5 along as well, I'm not sure I'm super comfy with the P to bring her out solo...
This time I will be stuffing a rag under the strings for some of the motown tunes. I have been experimenting with that the last few days. Not sure how it's gonna sound on stage with 10 other musicians and a club full of dancers but it surely cops a good vibe at home......

Friday night went really well, I now am very happy with the set up on the new bass and my ear is getting more comfortable hearing a P with flats on a gig. I also used a cloth under the strings for some motown tunes and that sounded really cool!
I am noticing the nitro finish on the neck is slightly sticky, my Lakland JO has the absolute perfect finish, the LG5 while it has a poly finish is a little more smooth feeling. Nothing a little rub down with a rag doesn't fix but anyone has any suggestions please let me know.
Now I made a big decision (not really) but I got a call to do a gig last night, Saturday, this was 4 sets 2 jazz on upright and 2 on electric. A band I never played with before all real deal pros that I wanted to do my best to impress. So at first thought I was thinking of bring my LG5 since I am ultra comfortable with that. Well I decided to go with the KBP5, I justified it by thinking the flats would eliminate allot of string noise and unwanted upper harmonics if I was searching around the changes or general fumbling and just create a solid foundation for the band.
It worked out real well and I'm finding the KBP-5 a very cool addition...

has spoiled me to the point where I cannot play my other basses. My turnaround time on GAS basses I had to have used to be 3-4 months - Now I simply buy them, have them setup, play them for a day and realize that I cannot get that tone or feel, take a picture of them and move em on.
I have only had the Alleva for 6 weeks - and in that time I have turned around 2 other basses with the third (thinking I needed something radically different) being received yesterday, played last night (1980 Bullet Bass 30' scale) which as of this morning has to go. Will have to think of another hobby (instead of hunting down unique basses) now that I am attached to this AC.
