Hi

I just talked with Jimmy,,, My bass body shipped! Pbass!

So the LG-5 sonic blue was Dave Boonshafts it is from the same batch of "European" alder as Turners. I guess the Brazilian that Jimmy had at this point was thin so he was "capping" the fingerboard as opposed to slab board construction. So in fender terms that like a 63-64 as opposed to a 60-62. Slighter brighter.

He also has

Burgandy mist KPB-4

White KPB-4 with maple board.

Fiesta Orange LG-4

Thx for the heads up guys...I just spent about 30 minutes on the phone with Jimmy.
Nice guy!
The blue is a little out of my price range, but we spent some time talking about having one built that would best suit my needs.
I didn't place an order today, but it feels like I can probably swing one in the not too distant future.

Now THERE's a bass I think would fit you perfectly... an AC... beware tho... as in Ken's case, they can be hazardous to the health of your other instruments... :D

FWIW; if/when I order, I'm planning on an LG5 standard in 3TS, tort guard, indian r/w fingerboard, alleva pups and pre. pretty plain; but, what jimmy recommended for my budget, and use.

I've gotta tell you I got my LG5 back between Haloween and Thankgiving of last year and I haven't been happier. My prized Lakland JO has not been played since. Recently picked up a KBP5 totally a luxury not a necessity, in any case the basses are just a step above everything for my hands and ears.....

I don't think you'll be disappointed, choose your fingerboard wood wisely it does change the flavor in a subtle way...

I wouldn't know what to choose other than what Jimmy recommends, I have no experience at all with all the options he offers.
He told me the Indian r/w wood best match my uses.

IMO, the only important decisions to make are:

1) 4 string or 5

2) 60's type alder/RW J, 70's type ash/maple J or P

Everything else (finish, color, specific variety of RW, guard or no guard, etc.) is mostly icing on the cake, and primarily aesthetic.

Hard to go wrong if you match 1 and 2 to your tone goals and playing style/needs.

I have the Indian Rosewood Board on my KBP-5, it has Maple dots inlaid as Fret Markers. What a nice Tone it gives - and depending on string selection, it gets aggressive w/ DR High Beams, Much more subtle with the AC Strings - and have yet to try the TI Flats - but assume they would move the tone down quite a bit. Will try the TI's next time I am bored.

Anyway - the Indian Rosewood has a nice color and in my experience, with my playing, beats Ebony, Maple, Pau Ferro and any other board I have played on.

Good Luck with the Build!

1) 5 string
2) 60's: alder, r/w
3) poly 3 tone sunburst, tort guard

Totally agree! Does that mean I disagree with my own statement:help:

Seriously assuming you want a 5 string 60s J and are going with an LG5 for those reasons.

Have to disagree (partly) with the above..and I just wanted to chime in and contribute some thoughts about this in the thread.

I have an LG5, an LM5, and an RA5.....the alder/maple RA is actually my first go- to AC at this point- by a hair. Its 9 pounds 12 ounces so its not super light alder, and it has a great combination of punch, fullness, and sweetness both on the slap and finger tones. It goes Marcus- like and also gets a warmer and fatter finger tone at the same time. I can only talk for mine and esoxhntr's (they are almost identical in tone as we have ab'd them) but every other pro bassist who has checked mine out so far (several) have also concurred about the model.
Nothing takes away from my LG or LM..I love them both and absolutely do use them. The back pup finger tone on the LG reigns and its overall warmth and sweetness is great...as is the confident punchy low end and clarity of the LM...but dont pass up the RA as an option if you are looking at getting an AC. I think it gets too little press on the thread because the more active posters here dont play/own them and its not the classic wood combo- which I understand. I wouldent have actually ordered that model unless I was able to really spend some time and live with George's (esoxhntr) before I ordered..partly because it was NOT what I expected it to be. For some reason though, this combo in Jimmy's formula works amazingly IMO ( at least in the two RA's I really know well).

So again, I just wanted to say that having the 3 different models here, I wouldent exclude checking out the RA if you are in the market for an AC.

Cheers
Mitch

+1 I realize my post was a bit over simplistic. However, the key is, do you want a more 60's vibe or a more 70's vibe? Then, flavor as desired:D

-1 :hiding:

Those of us who have dropped coin on mulitple A-Cs probably don't want any information on another model that is a great must have.;)

Seriously interesting info, your right not much info passing about on the RA

Hopefully I've covered my "must have" AC needs...;) You have covered an even wider span than me for sure~

Its hard to really choose "the best" AC- very individual, just think the RA needs to be considered seriously.

I've learned also to not think as much in terms of needing a standard "70s vibe" vs a "60s vibe" comparison. I think its useful to think in terms of what individual instrument or model speaks in your hands and to your style with no preconceptions . I had some mild preconceptions about alder /rosewood 60s position , and, alder/maple 70s position Jazzes until the LG and RA came along. Its also manufacturer specific- no formula seems to sound *exactly* the same from one brand to the other. Its a quirk of artistry.

Just as an aside to this...I often feel and hope that more players/musicians dont over-think or over simplify/catagorize their art and let the chips fall where they *should* land.

If anyone wants any input about the RA feel free to pm me.

Cheers

Hey Andrew,
Actually the fingerboard is more like a mid '62 J. So it's not the normal slab you'd find on a '60 J thru early '62 J and not the capped, curvered rosewood board you'd find on a late '62 J thru 70's J, something in between but for argument sakes let's call it a thin slab for now. This transitional period board is very rare for the old basses and I guess for my basses too. You are correct though that my wood supplier at the time only had thin pieces that I didn't want to pass on. So I had to come up with some idea as to use them. Laminating is certainly unorthodox and a real pain in the ass to do. I only built two or three five string basses and maybe three four string basses like this. I will not do this again as its too much of a hassle and I simply don't have the wood :-). I've recieved a few phone calls about the sound; what I have heard from Paul's bass in a Live situation with Annie Lennox is that there is a little more snap and the hi's are crisp for an old Brazilian board. It cut more in the mix... not a bad thing for gig like Annie's. Hope this clears up a few questions.
Jimmy
