Nice, and yeah, pickguard ALL THE WAY on that.
You will love that bass in a mix, especially if you are going for a less aggressive 60's type tone, which obviously is the case. Sometimes that voicing can get eaten up in the mix, but as you posted in your nice review, there is enough sizzle and growl with these that they really do fine in virtually any setting.

Yeah, I know what you're saying about that little extra bit of edge in the LM vs the LG, but I just really dug the (IMHO) slightly bigger warmer fuller tone from the LG, and I gigged with that CAOJ LG and it had absolutely no problem identifying itself in a mix... even a loud thick one. At least with my personal style and amp/cab prefs and settings. I'm really looking forward to getting that first set of DR's on there, too.

+1 I dig the 60's type tone on occasion also, and the LG REALLY likes nickel strings also. I dug the Hi Beams on my LG, but it seemed to be trying to make it something it wasn't. I'd highly recommend trying some nickel wounds. That really brings out the best of that upper mid growl, versus the more upper sizzle of the Hi Beams that just doesn't seem to work as well with an alder/RW bass to my ear.
However, it's impossible to make these basses not sound good on way or the other!

Yeah, nickels are definitely on my list, and time will tell for sure, but I'm still thinking I'll land on a set of HB SS's in the end. On a bass like this, I'd expect to use more of the passive tone control until that initial extra brilliance wore off, but then you have that really long lasting mellower phase they go through and that seems to really work well for me on a lot of basses.
We'll see, tho.
Vic, I don't care if it has a pickguard or not its still gorgeous!!!! But you have to post another review for all of us to drool over when you swap your strings. Please include some TI flatwounds, Sadowsky Blue Label nickels and the DR high beams in the mix....please......
It may be a while before I get around to flats, but if I do, they'll definitely be TIJF's. On the Sadowsky nickels, also could be a while. I just (tried to) play along with that track, and forgiving my lack of skill compared to PT, I can definitely get that sound. I checked his settings, put mine in passive mode, bam. That bass has the Aggie in it I think, but I also seem to recall a previous post where someone said he played it passive.While I can't do that, my LG can.
His groove is so tight isn't it? I swear he never misses a beat.
Yeah we talked about the Aggie pre just 3-4 pages back. Turns out he had the pre in there, but bypassed it the whole gig and got an AC pre installed shortly thereafter.

He played it passive in the 45 min English tv show broadcast that was linked off of the AC web site.It had the Aggy pre then and was swapped to the AC. Maybe that footage is from that...I'm not sure I only really remember the intro.I don't think we really know much beyond that.

And Paul Turner is one of THE cats! His pocket and groove are second to none. One of my favorite groove artists for sure.
I definitely see myself having another Alleva at sometime. Jimmy is a genius when it comes to these type of basses.

Yeah, Jimmy's got it goin' on. I knew I had to have one after that CAOJ one. Definitely some magic mojo in these. Vibrant.
Does anyone know how Paul Turner sets his controls? (Vic? you said you checked his settings) 100% full both Pups? Favored Bridge? Favored Neck? Tone control?
I think my CAOJ gets that tone, with the neck rolled off SLIGHTLY and a bit of bass boost, treble all the way zero'd, and with the Tone control full clockwise.

The one video, assuming he was playing passive and hadn't done anything to alter at least the vol-vol-ptc layout, was definitely favoring the bridge, and with the ptc backed off a bit. Interestingly, he didn't have either volume dimed. I learned something new. If you turn your volumes down and turn your amp up, the bass sounds different. That makes sense, especially in a passive circuit, I just never really thought of experimenting with it before.
Yeah Vic, If there is a Gain and a Master Volume knob. Then you really need to find the optimum balance with the two. I usually have the Input gain boosted to where it sounds right and then adjust the Master from there. Boosting the master vol. to high levels with only a tiny amount of gain always distorts (alters) the natural sound of my basses.
