Why did you change necks? Your LG5 has an alder body, right?
How did the sound change from rosewood to maple?

That's a beauty! They all look great to me. And +1... the LM model sounds like a really good stock vintage J, a little more aggressive than some of the very early passive Fender J's, but not at all the 'J on Steroids' thing that some of the 70's oriented boutique J's deliver. I like it a lot:D

They are wonderful. Just one comment. Jimmy's preamp is very, very subtle and organic, and the A-C's with the preamp installed sound WONDERFUL in passive mode. If you are thinking about spending the cash, I'd strongly suggest adding the pre. You could have the push pull wired so that the default 'down' position is passive, but then you would have the capability of adding a little more ooomph is certain occasions.

No doubt, on both comments!!! I'd love to pull the trigger on one of those as well, either sunburst or the age Oly White Bernie keeps running his mouth about... :hiding: :D As soon as my GS5 Custom is completed (hopefully early September, I need to call and Link Removed) I can start thinking of spending more money. The Mrs. will NOT be pleased to hear me say that though, so if you see her walking around in this thread please direct her away from this post...................

Yeah, i'd like to order his outboard pre to try against the sadowsky outboard i got recently...

Just if i ordered a bass, i'd love to have the standard chrome jazz control plate. If they can fit on volume, blend, passive tone and stacked bass and treble then i could do it with a side mounted jack. If i can sell some gear and save a bit of cash i'll get serious and send them and email.

Assuming the Sadowsky and A-C outboards are identical to the on-boards (I think they are), they are quite different sounding, with the Sadowsky really imparting its own tone... very deep, big low end, and massive sizzle in the treble boost. The A-C is much more subtle.

The best way I can describe it is that the Sadowsky basses sound TOTALLY different when moving from active to passive mode (and I believe Roger has posted that he conceptualized the Sadowsky J's as active instruments, with the preamp bypass put there more as a battery back-up thing versus a 'passive mode' operation switch)... much more 'modern', big, sizzly, etc. in active mode. The A-C seems to keep its passive tone much more when the preamp is engaged, and the bass and treble boost act more like subtle adjustments made from the amp versus sounding like an 'active bass' sort of thing. Hard to describe.

I like both pre's a lot, but there's something about the subtle effect of the A-C that is very cool... kind of like an active circuit for the guys who hate active circuits:cool:

Yeah, after finding my 2 sadowskys too modern with just enough passive fender character (for me) i've gone back to my 'cheap' passive japanese fender 62 reissue. I much prefer the vintage 7.25" radius too.

But i bought the sadowsky outboard so i could fatten it up. I love just using the sadowsky pre with the bass and treble somewhere between 1 and 2 clicks just to give me a bit a fat low boost. It helps with the Thunderfunk because that has a very tight low boost and the Sadowsky makes it a bit fatter and rounder...

Thats why the AC pre sounds so appealing, it sounds like it has a larger usable range and can be much more subtle. I wish i could fly to new york and check out the basses in the shop instead of having to order from the other side of the world!:D

+1... I love the way the Sadowsky pre interacts with the Thunderfunk for exactly the reason you state above.

The other cool thing about the A-C five strings, is that the 10" radius gives the 5 string neck a sort of vintage 4 string feel versus the 12" radius of the Sadowsky. You can really 'feel the curve' on the fretboard with the 5 string A-C. If freaked me out a little at first, since I'm so used to the flatter boards that most boutique 5's have. Now, it feels SO good to me, and it is another attribute of these basses that moves them toward the 'vintage versus modern'. Of course, the 5 string neck with full bridge spacing is still very different feeling than a 4 string jazz, but the 'spirit' of it feels quite vintage, if that makes sense.

Yes it has an Alder body.. This year at NAMM I was working with Jimmy and Marco at the alleva booth.. Jimmy made 2 necks for the "WHITE BASS".. Maple/binding... So it was an extra piece and i wanted to try it out... so we swapped them out.. I think I like the B string a little more.. It makes it a little more present... where the rosewood was a little warmer...
plus it has the blocks which i love...

But i am trying a new maple dot neck for jimmy in about a week or two.... My LG has been the test-bed bass for all the Alleva 5 strings it seems..

You may want to order Jimmy's pre in a pedal. I think its the same. Would help you with your choice if someday you want to buy one. As KJUNG has mentioned it isn't an in your face (Not sure or remember how he discribed it) type of pre. And again I tried his pre with bypassing the amps pre and it is sweet sounding. Its a type of pre that makes it sound vintage if you know what I mean. But there is a difference between the active and passive capabilities of the bass. I love them both but it just gives it a vintage boost.:hyper:

One more bit of 'Ken' information that I found interesting and unique with these basses.

The A-C's have a relatively deep neck pocket, and a relatively low neck radius. This results in the G and D strings being quite close to the body. This is the only J type bass that I've played that I would be comfortable playing slap style without a pick guard. The Sadowsky basses, for example, have A LOT of space between the strings and the body on the Standard model (without pickguard).

So, if you use slap style a bit, and are one who is sensitive to the distance between the strings and the body, and who like the look of a fancy top with no pickguard... these are PERFECT.

With a guard, the strings sit quite close to the body, but it took me about an hour to get totally comfortable with that.

Just more A-C fun facts, and as always, IMO and IME.

If I was a pro guitar player, I would snatch this beautiful instrument up in a heartbeat! I like it even better than the Brad Paisley Tele! lol
