+1 on the RA... that design makes a LOT of sense to me, and the look is very cool. The logic is a little bit like the RV5 Metro Sadowsky models.... an Alder body for a little more 'fatness', but a hard Morado board for that almost maple-like snap.... nice!!!

Ya..I played that one as they were showing me the new Aggie box..so I had to play it passive. But it was really sweet..loved it..as I have most RAs so far.

IMO you are right that the RA is still Marcus (to a greater degree than I had expected) but with something extra. The natural LM at the show was real nice, I guess just for me if I was going for a 70's AC it would be the RA so far....which is a side step for me as I've not ordinarily gone for alder/maple Jazzes as much as ash. Its the package that these wood choices comes in that makes the difference too ( pups, pre, finishes, etc.)

BTW, the LG is amazing, and has a pretty cool slap sound to boot (which was a bonus), but not for someone going for the 70s vibe.

Ken, one of things I thought of that makes the RA unique is that he polys the whole neck...while keeping the body nitro.

The neck finish is true 70s vintage, and that coupled with the maple board I'm thinking contributes to some degree to the bite and character of the tone in an authentic way for lack of a better word. The nitro also balances the tone out possibly keeping some openess and warmth in the mix as oppose to polying the entire bass. As you can tell I think that finishes do make some contribution to tone (as does Jimmy I'm guessing because he cares to go to this length).

Actually that Black bass has a Poly body as well as neck. The necks are being done that way because of the blocks ( I think that what he told me months ago) and Nitro was not recommended. I went with Poly body because it's period appropriate. It originally was going to be CAR but things were running real late with the paint and Jimmy had this body and I had expressed a interest in Black so....


Do you guys think It should keep the Aggy Pre or Go with the Alleva?

Do you know when they'll be back from Namm?

Makes sense... my Celinder Update has a similar poly finish and it's amazing. Talk about snap but fat!

Hi everyone! My first post on TB so here we go...

I got my Alleva Coppolo LG-5 in November last year. As most people her I really like the tone of the bass and the preamp possibilities. However I have one small issue I would like to share. The G string is a bit louder than the other strings, especially when playing high up the fretboard. I was wondering if anyone else has experienced the same with their AC's?

I read somewhere that Jimmy was experimenting with pickups that would have pole pieces with different lengths, which might be a solution to this issue. Anyone heard anything recently about this?

Hello,

It seems mine has pole pieces that kind of follow the curve of the fretboard, so maybe he has done this already. However, I find the balance between the B through G strings much more even than many other basses I've owned. The B and E aren't as 'huge' sounding as some other 5 strings, and the D and G are REALLY full and fat. That does kind of create a feeling that either the D and G or slightly louder, or that there is a little compression in the lowest notes. However, I now hear that as very even versus the 'thin G and huge B' of some of the other basses I've played.

I believe Tommix also mentioned this when he got his first one... that he usually lowers the 'bass' side of the pickups on basses but didn't have to with the A-C.

That's just IMO there. If the G really pops too much for you, I'm sure Jimmy would do a slight route for you under the G string side of the pickups so you could lower that side a touch.

Thanks Ken. Looking into it the pole pieces on mine also slightly follow the curve of the fretboard. By the way I did a comparison with my Celinder J Update 5 and on that one the G string seems to be more "in line" with the others.

Will have a think about a slight route. I live on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean though so I would probably have to use some local luthier to do the job.

It would probably be pretty easy for any set-up guy to do for you. My Update 5 definitely has a different 'balance' to it, with the low end sounding bigger than my Alleva, and the upper strings being less mid punchy, so I think we may be hearing the same thing. My guess is, it's the very strong upper mid growl that is built into the very vintage Alleva tone that makes the upper notes and also the D and G strings in general to seem to 'pop' a touch more than other basses that have a touch more 'scoop' to them like the Update and the Sadowsky basses.

I also find that a moderate boost on the bass control of the Alleva preamp works wonderfully to fatten the lower notes up while pretty much leaving the upper range of the instrument intact. That's pretty cool... kind of a 'slap fattener' control, versus the huge impact of the bass boosts on my Update or Sadowsky.

Sounds like we have a similar collection of basses. Aren't those Celinder Updates something:bassist:

Just played Mike's new LG... NICE! Just what you would think in comparing to my LM... just a little fatter down low and just a touch smoother in the upper end, but actually pretty subtle... similar to the differences between Sadowsky MV's and RV's of similar weight.

You can almost just pick the look you like and take the plunge... they seem to all sound great!

Hi


I just got off the phone with Jimmy. I have a terrible dilemma ,really, it's just one of life's difficult decision's.

So this bass.......

........was originally supposed to be CAR. The Black Body was available in time for Namm and jimmy put it together with that body.

Well, the CAR body is now at the shop.



What color do you guys like? Classic Black or CAR?

With the black blocks and binding... I dig the black. But....:D... the CAR would be awesome too. I guess that didn't help much.

I guess if I had to decide, I'd go with the black. It works perfectly with the black blocks and binding, and the maple neck gives it plenty of color contrast. A big IMO there!
