THAT'S RIGHT! Rub it in.... Believe me it was something I regretted from the second I did it. That is the most even 5 string I ever had. Every note just jumps off the board. It also has the richest Indian Rosewood I have ever laid eyes on...Overall the best 5 string bass I have laid hands on. I hope my new Sunburst is the 4 string equivalent! I can't wait to get it! Enjoy the 5 and play her in good health...



BTW - How about a proper review once you have the chance??? I know how great she is but you need to share the AC love!

i cant get over the silly putty looking paddle headstock, and the body size is just waaaaaaaaay too big for my smallish frame, but dangnabbit, jimmy's basses sound amazing!

just put my deposit for his preamp down, hopefully, it'll get me in the same ballpark. now only if he'd offer the pickups for sale, too!

he does offer the 4 string J pups for sale....
I had a set of single coil classic Duncans in my jazz bass which i thought sounded very good.. at least to my ears...
The Alleva J 4 string replacements had the same mids with maybe 3 db more overall output.. but the highs were silkier and the sub bottom had more bloom... they were and still are a smoother sounding and responsive pup... i need to get a P pup of his for my kbp4... his P pups have a little more focus to them from what i remember when i did an A/B to my Antiquity2s in my original kbp4

the sub bottom bloom! exactly as i heard it. have yet to really hear that from another pickup or bass for that matter.

KJung and I both agree on something about the headstock. In photo's it looks a little "Gumby-ish". But when you actually see it, it's really not bad at all.

And after playing reduced size body basses, the larger body is real cool. But then again, I'm 6' 220lbs with wide shoulders

It's hard to argue regarding the headstock. I totally dig it, but it is 'interesting' and definitely a 'love it/hate it' thing. I do feel it looks much more balanced, cool and funky in person than in pictures, but again... if you don't dig it, I can see why!

That being said, Mike's new bass sounds like it's a killer. I remember that one when it was being talked about the first time around. I've always wanted to try the more 60's version of Jimmy's bass, and now I will get to!

I have also put a very rare (for me) 'dibs' on that bass already if it turns out to not be Mike's thing down the road

I am so close to joining the club!! I called the shop the Tuesday after NAMM and picked up an LM5 in suburst, maple board and no guard. I have been wanting one of these for a few years now and never jumped on it. It will be here any day now.

Btw, I love the headstock.

got the stompbox to put on my pedalboard.

i thought about having one put into my board, but alot of that AC mojo also comes from the pickups, which dont fit my 5 string basses.

well, i live 20 min from the shop, and yes, i've seen many many many times. so its even bigger in person! haha...

besides, i thought 5 on a side headstocks were passe? doesnt that config mess w/ the headstock? someone wanna shed some light?

but yea, i'm super tempted in picking one up as a recording bass, but then thought, "wait a minute, i own a sadowsky!"

- Neck dive... none standing with strap... sitting, just like every other J bass... a little bit.

- Slap tone... these basses are NOT 'J basses on steroids' like the Celinder or Ateliers. Even though they are active, they are very vintage/passive sounding. However, the LM model (ash/maple) is designed to be a little more aggressive. I love the slap tone A LOT, but it's more old school passive than juiced up active like Marcus.

- Controls.... the 5 knob has the very overpriced but IMO necessary passive tone control, the 4 knob does not.

- Wait time... I know Mikebass just talked to the shop... I think he said about a year at this point... but can't quite remember.

Fiance and other questions... not going there!

Also, remember there are other models... the RA, Modern, etc.

The one thing these basses do that is quite different from the Sadowsky, Celinder type thing is channel a vintage, passive Fender tone in a 5 string (or 4) active bass. The pre is very subtle and mellow in these, and the single coils are just simply the best J pickups I've ever heard... ever... again, for that 1968 passive thing!!!

MIke can comment on the LG/LM differences!

2) LM5 for that "Marcus" stuff IMO. But The LG has a killer slap tone too!

3) The 4 knob'r would seem to be without the vintage tone control, but with the pre-amp.

4) Wait time as of Tuesday was "at least" 6 months- as said from Marko at AC himself.

5) No, everything that is on order is "sold" (I asked them the same question)

After living with an LG and using it, and having played numerous LMs and RAs in direct comparisons, I'd recommend anyone considering a 70's leaning AC to consider the RA as much as anything else. They seem to have a great 70s punch and attack and with more zing in the high end than I had expected for alder. So while the LMs I've tried sound great too, I found so far the RAs had enough cut and punch but with a slightly sweeter nuance....with a slight kick in the mid response.
I'd say for pure "Marcus" the LM is a bit closer as expected, but I wouldent rule out the RA for getting close and delivering a great 70's funk tone with alot of character.

BTW the RA has 70's spacing, alder body, poly maple neck and board, nitro body, and I would not order any of these basses without a passive tone.

I'm so glad to hear you talk up the RA because I chose that as my 70's vibe bass. Partially because the marcus thing is just a little over done for me and I want to be one step to the side. Partially because I know 2 different people who own 73 jazz basses one was stung with flats one was rounds and I love those 2 basses!


Marcus with a slightly sweet midrange is exactly what I was going
for!
