Club Bordwell Part 3

Yes, cliff will be using the Hipshot system. I talked to Hipshot and the bridge itself is similar to their type A bridge. I would like 18mm string spacing. Have to talk to Cliff about that.

Very nice. So far, I have heard nothing but good things about the Hipshot system.

The bass will probably fit in a guitar case now!

This thought has certainly crossed my mind more than once!

What scale length and tuning are you going with?

I'm going with a 34 inch scale. I haven't seen Cliff do any headless basses so I hate being a guinea pig. I really like the work and designs of his other basses so i'll take my chances. I like the idea of a singlecut with no headstock. I should be able to use a light piece of swamp ash for the body and it still should balance well. Tuning will be easier and the tuning pegs wont get moved so it should stay in tune longer.
I play in a lot of clubs where there really isn't a stage and the audience is real close. I have to be careful not to hit some person dancing right next to me with my Fender jazz headstock. So headless will make it easier!
It will be easier to fly with too.

I think I asked this in the past, but can't remember. How is the B of TI Jazz Flats in 34" scale? Thinking of building a fretless P/MM 6 string.

I believe someone in the next batch or batch after that will be going headless.

I've tried them on a 33" fretless and it wasn't bad at all, albeit a little more supple than expected. Don't think you'd have any problems on a 34".

Eude

A 34" scale SC headless should look great as a 5-string!

One thing I am curious about is how Cliff will aesthetically work the headless bridge hardware into the SC design. Whatever he decides, I bet you it will be fantastic!

I found this photo on the Hipshot site and love the way this particular bass has the body wood cut around the bridge hardware:

Hey Bordwellians
Figured I would chime in on something real quick. I recently had a scare with my zebra SCB 5 string bass. It appeared that the truss rod was stripped and I might have to lose the bass.
Well, long story short, I took it to a great repair guy here in town and he found that with a 3mm wrench it can grip the truss rod a little deeper than normal and still make adjustments.
I only bring this up because I know on some of Cliff's older basses, some other people were having problems with the truss rods, (I know I have talked to ScottM about it). So before you freak out like I did, make sure you try using the 3mm allen wrench and a little elbow grease.

The original allen wrench for that truss rod is a 3mm.
Yeah, I was confused by Tim's post as well... the allen key always fit perfectly... can't imagine stripping it out.

Anyway, confusion lifted. :)

To clarify my post above. This only applies to the older truss rods (which he no longer uses), so you have nothing to worry about if you have a newer bass or are planning on ordering one. I only posted it to try to be helpful. I cannot say enough about the quality of Cliff's work and his customer service.

New body style coming in two builds from now.
What do you guys think, doublecut or singlecut?

HEY! HEY! HEY! Does this mean for those basses being built for November 2012? Huh? If so, do we get to preview the shapes of things to come?

Cliff: We need to talk. :D

Oh. Silly me. I didn't answer your question... I'd like to see another single cut option.
