Your reasoning for going headless makes sense to me.

I'm thinking the Hipshot Headless System will be cool for a 32" scale for a number of reasons:

1) Total length of instrument will be reduced - talk about easily transportable...fit into a guitar case?

2) Less weight on the headstock side of things (as you have stated)

3) No need to string through the body or have custom string gauges - just use 34" scale strings and snip off what you don't need at the headpiece.

4) Just flat out fun to have! :D

Don't have any detail shots or a review yet but here are some shots of the bass in action from last weekends gigs. I am digging this bass more and more each time I play it.
Side note... Played my fretless last night and I just have to say that Cliff's work is on another level. I love my new bass but I seriously think my fretless purpleheart bordwell is the nicest instrument I have and will ever play :)

That new bass looks really sharp! :cool:I bet it sounds killer! I'm loving the new logo as well.

The "ramp" almost looks like it is made to be switched around with the other pickups...in case you want to change pickup positions.

Nice looking bass Tim! I love that shape a lot too.

Just told Cliff some ideas for another bass, so there is a good chance I might be in a build for another short scale bass in the future.

It sounds like this...

Not the best audio but gives you a rough idea. Sounds like a jazz bass on steroids but with a distinct earthy tone... what I would call the bordwell touch. ;) :bassist:
As for the ramp. I am not a fan of the double sided tape thing so I asked Cliff to set it with screws. I was expecting a piece of wood that would fully fit between both pickups. But Cliff set it up so the ramp is essentially a dummy pickup. Which feels great and looks better than the usual "chunk of wood" in between the 2 pickups. Plus, as an added bonus, Cliff made the bottom side of the ramp ebony so i can flip it over and have a black surface on top... which is good cause with as much as I plan on playing this bass I am sure i am gonna destroy that maple

I much prefer the look of your pseudo-pickup over the typical "ramp" / chunk of wood. This has a very clean look to it. That Cliff is a clever man with his details. :cool:

I think this new shape is so happening. I love it. Tim, what pickups are in this bass? Sounds great in the clips.

edit: I also have the ramp on my bass the same way....mounted like a third pickup. I greatly prefer it this way.

Thanks. My Spector has a Pau Ferro board, and I really dig it. I just placed an order for another build; this time with a Pau Ferro board. I thought the Pau w/ the Tulipwood looked really sharp, and was thinking of doing a Pau pup cover/ramp on the next bass, but ultimately went with flamed and spalted maple. And the countdown begins...again...

Every time I see this bass, I can't help but think of Pringles potato chips!

On another note, what do you think of the Nordstrand dual coil pickups in your bass?

Ok, this is OT, so folks can PM me if they want, but what's with the whole handlebar mustache thing? I've seen a t-shirt with one on it recently as well, so I figure it's a new meme of some kind, but I don't know the backstory. Any help? :)

Google: fingerstache. It's nothing dirty. But that was the first place I started seeing the moustache craze -- maybe a year or two ago. Along the same lines, Bacon seems to be making a huge push upward. I've seen Bacon mentioned on bumperstickers, t-shirts, posters, etc etc etc.

Moustaches and Bacon. Hmmm. Maybe my new hipster band just got a name! Woot!

FWIW, I love Shawn's inlay. I'm not a hipster, but it's just funny. Light-hearted. Like, "don't take me too serious."

I get a lot of Mr Pringles and "Do not pass go" jokes around the office....


I dig them.........really dig them. This Bass has a few "options" that were not drastic, but new to me. One being the dual coil pickups with series/single/parallel and the other being V-V-T controls.
Right now I am running the Neck pickup in Series with the Bridge pickup in Single Coil mode. I also have the Volume favoring the Bridge pickup for a little bite.
There seems to be a TON of tonal options here, but the previous combo has peaked my senses.

I should have some more pics this weekend
