Club Bordwell Part 4

The last time I visited this thread was... well, many months ago. It's also been a while since I've played my CB.

Anyway, I've been meaning to put up some sound clips of my bass. Here's a short one - nothing special, just wanted to demonstrate the low strings/lower positions on my 32" six string. I was trying to get the sounds across rather than anything musical (disclaimer!)



I have a bunch of switches and knobs and a preamp, but this is just passive, with the coil switches set to 'single' (Nordstrand dual coils wound for parallel).

Will put up some more stuff to show off the Audere preamp and the various pickup configurations for anyone that might be interested.

Thank you for posting that audio sample...it sounds great! I have admired the looks of that bass for years; it's nice to hear it a bit!

If you are taking requests, I would love to hear the bridge pickup solo/passive in parallel, series and single coil mode across the range of the fingerboard. That would be fantastic.

Really nice solid low end there mate, sounds very punchy in the lower register. Are you using custom strings on the bass to match the shorter scale, or are you just using off the shelf ones?
I play 33" basses at the moment and regular strings work just fine but I have a 31.5" headless 6er on the go (with another builder) and I've been looking at having custom strings made.

Thanks Tapy. Ok, I've just recorded using the bridge pickup in series/single/parallel (in that order). I can't 'solo' the pickups in passive mode, so I've recorded this in active, with the eq flat and the high/low-Z off. It sounds very similar to passive mode.



I didn't play up the neck, because the sound I get when recording direct doesn't really do the bass justice. I will try with a mic on the amp or perhaps using some eq/plugins in the DAW.

Yeah thanks mate. I'm almost embarrassed to say this, but they're actually the original strings that came with the bass! Cliff told me they are DR Nickel Lo-Riders. I am very happy with these strings though. They are easy to play, don't wear the frets and they sound nice.

Thanks for the info. No need to be embarrassed, some folks keep strings on for years! I've often found that DRs can last a good 6 months of home practice before sounding too tired, gigging tends to beat them up a bit quicker though. Just for your info, Fodera strings are very good too, the nickels anyway (only ones I've tried).

More pics of the bass would be nice too, if you get time :)

Hi,

My CB is being built as we speak just can't wait !!! Mine is the 32"scale Dola with quilted maple top wenge body and pau ferro. I'm hoping to get a nice warm tone and not scrafice to much bite... I check the page every day for update(stressful)...

Cool! Since I have a Dola in the queue for early next year, yours is of particular interest, and I'm anxious to see how it looks with the matching front and back facings. What are the other specs?

The pickups are nordstrand parallel dual coil with switches for single coil operation. The preamp is aguilar with push/pull active passive volume switch. I'm Trying to get a couple of basses out of this one. Hopefully that work out for me.

The neck is cliff modern option with 16deg radius, I think..I ask for a thin neck because of my small hands. The hole reason for this build is to get rid of that reach I have on my 534 MTD, so I went short scale. I have to pull up my spec sheet to see the rest of my options. Hopefully this is the bass and never have to buy another one again .. My ears are pretty much set on a more warmer smoother tone now days then the bright open tones..

Yes it would! I'm hoping yours will help me make a final decision on which pickups to put in mine, actually...I'm leaning strongly towards a pair of Nordstrand Neo Blades because I can be fairly certain I'll be happy with them, but the Bigman keeps calling me!
