Just got an e-mail from Cliff. He's never had to do this type of repair or replacement before but is confident that any skilled repairman would be capable. Well, I'm not gonna let any local guys try this so here's a question: anybody know any primo inlay artists here on the east coast?

I really trust the guys at Alpha. I have had them do repairs for me before and they do a great job!

You came to Gloucester and didn't call me to see you play? Shame on you! I was just joking about wanting to steal you new bass :-)

Not sure if Walter does that type of work but its worth asking. Turns out there are a few luthiers in the Newport News area who do custom inlay and repair work. Also found a guy in Verona (near Harrisonburg) who has a good reputation.

Our gig at the Gloucester Moose was less-than-stellar. I was off by a half-step for a good portion of the evening. That's okay...I told the guys I was playing fretless and they fell for it. To paraphrase an old quotation:

"There are no wrong notes....but there are a handful that suck really bad and don't fit within the context of the tune."

I don't have any pics of the bass yet. I had band practice right after work and got home at about 10 here. I have a very busy week so, maybe Friday or Saturday. Thanks for the interest though. I am also really looking forward to seeing your fretless being built. Should be awesome.

Also, Riis, I don't know if I have said this or not, but congratulations on the wonderful new bass. I hope you get your fret marker issue figured out soon, but enjoy the bass anyway.

Finally got around to setting her up in preparation for our Saturday night gig at the Gloucester Moose Lodge (scottm's neck of the woods). The Nordstrand / Audere combination was outstanding and required little in the way of EQing despite having 4 bands available. Tone and volume were well balanced up and down the fingerboard with no discernible bumps or deadspots. All was going well....until the lights went down.

As you can see, the FB is a highly figured maple (spalted maybe?) with small abalone side dot markers. There is virtually no contrast so, in dim light, the markers and fret ends disappear within the camouflage. The FB radius is also flat so there is no fret "arc" visible while in a normal standing / playing. In essence, all reference points vanish which makes it difficult for a hack like me to navigate. Guess I'm going to have to learn to play without looking at the fingerboard!

There's a lesson to be learned here: be careful what you ask for when building your "dream" bass.

And glad I subscribed to this one. My newly-acquired Nordstrand NX5 :hyper: has the same problem with small MOP side dots, no top dots, and a maple/BE maple neck. Under stage lights, they're gone!

Cliff and I have elected to do MOP or abalone on the fingerboard, depending on the darkness of that particular position on the fingerboard. Definitely not something I would have thought of since every fingerboard I've played so far has had a very uniform color throughout.

Cliff can do many different shapes. Kinda depends on what you want to order.

Hey gang, I thought I would let you know that I have put all but one of my basses up for sale and my CB was one of them. It was by far the hardest one to list of the three and I truly mean that. But you may have noticed I've not been around much for the last few months. The reason for this is I took up Bass about 4 1/2 years ago and for two years I took lessons every week and I practiced every night. Then at the start of 08' I stopped the lessons as I wasn't getting anywhere and was unhappy with my lack of progress. So I've been practicing only on rare occasions and this past week came to the conclusion that I'm just not a musician. So I took advantage of the day off today to ring in the new year with new resolve to keep only one bass to practice on and stop letting this wonderful bass sit in a closet untouched. It deserves to be in the hands of a musician.

If the bass sells, I'll give up my member position and ask if anyone is interested in continuing keeping record of members for me. I have enjoyed my time on these boards and I can't say how pleased I am with the members of this club, you guys truly are the best.

While I don't know you personally, but it sounds like you're in the middle of something we've all experienced, some of us multiple times. It's the dreaded slump. A few things in your post hinted that you're in a slump and I think I'd be good at picking some of those things up since I'm in a slump as well.

Slumps suck, but you can really take advantage of them if you're willing to experiment. My slump is from losing a band during the first time in local history that there wasn't a desperate bassist shortage. In fact, this is the first time there is actually a bassist abundance! To me, you sound uninspired at the moment. I don't know why and frankly it doesn't matter. It is perfectly healthy to put your bass down for a bit. Now grab a set of headphones and start listening to all sorts of music until something grabs you! I can't tell you what you'll like or how long it will take to find it, but my gut tells me that this is your slump buster!

In the mean time, I'd highly recommend against selling your best basses. Sure, the money is good, but you'll eventually regret it. No offense to the Warmoth, but I have a feeling it won't feel nearly as good in your hands as the CB, Stambaugh, and Nordy. Some day I might sell some gear, but the CB (along with the Conklin, and a Rob Allen or two) are lifers!

BEADG, like Spade2you said, we've all been there. I played drums for 25 years and then stated playin bass :confused:because that inspires me more right now.
Nothin' wrong with selling gear iether, but if you don't have to, it's nice to have quality musical instruments around when you do get inspired, or to hand down one day to a child or relative.:bassist:
iether way good luck and I'm sure things will work out, they always do;)

Hey Doug. Cliff officially uses the term oval to describe the neck on my singlecut. I don't know if that is what the Rami neck shape is (couldn't find the specs anywhere???) The oval to me is more of a d shape with a flatter profile and slightly wider than most standard (lakland, fender, warwick, etc) basses but not as wide as a handful of other higher end 5'ers (Pedulla, Peavey, etc). I made it a point to play a ton of basses before I ordered my CB and I can honestly say that the neck on my singlecut is one of the most comfortable and best playing necks I have ever played (and that includes all the crazy boutique basses I played at NAMM last year). This is all IMO of course. :bassist::bassist:
I am dying to see finished pics of the newest batch... anybody got any they can post?

Thanks for the advice guys. I have my suspicion that given the economy it is going to be a long time before it sells and I'm not willing to go much lower in price so a lot can change between now and then. It probably would be best to just sell the two 5 string basses and focus on 4, I really don't know what I was thinking when I bought a fretless.:rollno::rollno::rollno:

I am sorry to hear of your situation, but I wish you the very best of luck in your en devours with music and the bass. I wish I could pick up that awesome bass from you, but a this time, it just isn't an option.

In other news, I will be taking pictures of my basses today, and hopefully posting them up this weekend.
