I don't think the bass pictured in that post has a Limba top. I think he was posting it to show the oil finish and was commenting on a different bass with a Limba top. That IS a great looking top though. Tom, care to comment on what is it? I'm guessing Walnut. :hiding:

Ah, yes. I missed the prior post showing the bass with the limba top (which is also very nice).

I totally agree with the Q-tuner pickup. Combined with the piezo in the bridge, it gives all sorts of beautiful sounds. Really awesome! and thanks for the nice words, too :)

I'm actually really glad to hear that. My biggest worry in selling my current Clement #170, is that if I have one made I won't be able to get the sound that I love so much but your testimony has eased that a bit. Is you're Phoenix the one Tom's homepage? That thing's a beauty! One more question, could you say anything on the difference between the Nordstrand, Bartolini, and Q tuner pickups in Tom's basses? I'm gonna ask the man himself, of course, but the more opinions the better.

I have Alumitone and Hipshot piezo bridge in my 6-string fretless Jon, I have a Q-tuner and a Hipshot piezp bridge in my 5-string Phoenix and I've got a single Nordstrand MM4.1 (I think the model is) in my 4-string fretless Jon. They all have a wonderful tone. The fingerboards are all wonderfully even and allows the bass to sing throughout the register. Don't be so worried about tone. Tom doesn't build a bass without the mwah. :)

And yes, that's my phoenix on Tom's home page :-)

They are all shown off in the Christmas greeting I made for Tom for 2009. It's on his web site. Melody line is played on my four-string Nordstrand-equipped fretless, the other line during the melody part is played on my 6-string Jon with Alumitones. The fretless solos are played on the Phoenix, gradually shifting from piezo pickup only to magnetic pickup only. The fretted solo is on the Anne, same mix... gradually moving from piezo to magnetic.

About pickup, what can I say.... they all sound amazing. The weakest pickup is probably the Alumitone. But on that bass, the pickup positions are a little closer to the neck, and in addition, raising them a little also helped a lot (positions were my mistake, I was erroneously assuming that the piezo would substitute for the bridge pickup, but I was wrong... I would rather shift the two pickups closer to the bridge). I don't have Barts in any fretless bass at the moment, but my Anne and my Yamaha has them, and they sound great. I guess my ears aren't as fine tuned *lol* The only thing that throws me off is scale length. Apart from that, I think I find "my sound" in any bass, more or less :)

Last update on mine *lol*

The birdseye maple board had issues, so we had to leave that idea. And the myrtlewood is dead sexy.... but... in my honest opinion... not anywhere as sexy as this little beauty here. May I present the Clement Willow Curly Ebony Bass! Birdseye maple covered pickups, and an african olive fingerboard.

EDIT: oh, just have to mention, this fingerboard is not the one intended for this bass, though.. but a similar one. I hope it's going to be light enough to not stand too much out from the maple pickup covers :-)

How about Ebony fingerboard, top, and pickup covers with all black hardware? By the way, I love the Curly Ebony!

hehe lovely ideas :-) we'll see how things turn out. We have these parts, everything else of what you are mentioning would have to be made from scratch.

we'll see :) I did put up a sketch with ebony fingerboard, in my humble opinion, the lighter pickups and fingerboard adds a lot of life to the top. :-)

Yes, I know, it would be dead sexy with birdseye on this top, but.... we'll see :)

I have a feeling things might still change! :D But the top is locked. And so is most likely the fingerboard. It's ordered, anyway. :D

Well, I must confess to you...one of the basses that I want to have built is a 32"/812.8mm scale 6-string. It would have an Ebony fingerboard and top, would be headless, and all of the hardware would be black. Tuned: E1 A1 D2 G2 C3 F3. Most likely a single passive pickup (straight to the output jack) placed somewhere around the traditional StingRay pickup position or possibly the bridge. The bass body would be a single-cut design.

:-) I think Tom got more ebony tops today ;)
And who knows... maybe he would be convinced to try making pickup covers and matching stuff up just the way you're talking about? *lol*

Did this sketch today, cause I suddenly came to think of how sad it would be to cut away all that ebony :ninja:

And as you suggested, it would be nice with pickup covers out of the same body wood.... but I'm not sure Tom does them.

That purple fingerboard is katalox.... it's really beautiful, but unfortunately may not be a perfect match for the ebony top.
