.02 here. I have been using TI flats on #196 and they mwahh just wonderfully. I believe the setup is more important (flame the man right here) than the strings and I have several fretless basses over the years.

Strings are as personal and important for your sound as underwear for your.... oh, nevermind, I don't think I can save that line.
My TI flats are mwahing great, in a little different and not so aggressive way as my rounds. However, i cannot get the same "Jaco bite" from them as I can on the rounds, and I cannot make them work for me. This is the clue, though... for me! Each player has to figure out what works for them
A flatwound string reminds me more of an acoustic upright bass than anything else. Nothing wrong with that at all. It's just a different sound and feel, that's all.
Amazing strings dem Sun Beams, I absolutely love them.
If you like them but would like something a little more full on, Nickel Lo Riders are amazing too.
Just wish they were cheaper here in the UK.
I end up buying them from the US via ebay, the US cost plus shipping to the UK is still substantially cheaper than just buying them over here...

I think Tony Franklin famously uses Sun Beams on his fretless basses.
I never have, but when I get a fretless, soon hopefully, that's what will be going on mine.
They're still roundwounds, so they'll eat at the fingerboard, but from what I gather they're a little bit softer so might not be quite as bad as using hex-core higher tension stainless steels...

It is about 2:00am where he is now so I will answer. The top wood is a Koa set I have had for several years and the fingerboard is Pao ferro... keep thumpin' crew!!

Your latest creation for Bompa is beautiful - is that maple and wenge on the neck? Real classy!
For both, I'd say.
The SunBeams are identical to the HiBeams, they are just nickel and not steelwound, so slightly warmer sounding. The feel is much the same.

Most of my basses has the steel HiBeams on them. However, sometimes if a bass is a little "harsh" sounding or a little "trebly", I throw a set of SunBeams on it, and it warms it up a little. I don't think any of my Clements have Sunbeams on them... They all have HiBeams, except the 6-string fretless Jon, which has Black Beauties, and the Phoenix, which has TI Jazz flats.
I'm considering swapping the Black Beauties out for a set of HiBeams... The reason I haven't switched on the Phoenix is that it's quite acoustic in character, and it does sound quite a bit different from my other fretless basses. Some of it stems obviously from the TI Flats, but some also from the chambering and the piezo. So I was thinking to let it stay "acoustic" and leave the upright thump on it. However, this is resulting in the bass not getting nearly as much play time as my 4-string Tundra bass. Which is sad in one way... but good in another way.
Seeing as how it's a Hipshot A-bridge, I could probably just swap them and keep the flats... it should be farily quick to replace them after should I want to go back.
