Everything is going fast and nice for everyone it seems. I hope we can have some sound clips soon from Kwesi and Funky and sdlstn. The looks are already there, now the sound. :smug:

Haha, looks like you guys like my bass as much as I do :D! A video will definitely be happening when I do get it but I'll have some simple soundclips up before that. Can't wait to see/hear the other basses in the works. Bompa and Funky, yours are looking fantastic!

Also, just wondering but how many of you would like to see a matched headstock option? I know I would :)

That's the thing with Clements - nothing else compares. Had six other brand names that were all obsolete once 174 was delivered (and shortly after, sister 184).

All the recent activity has me thinking again....#5 is just around the corner.
Beautiful looking instruments guys, great choices and combinations. Can't wait for the clips.

What string choices have you guys made for your Clements and what would you recommend? I have a fretless Mike in early gestation - pair of Bart soapbars and a Glockenklang. Yup, I'm gonna slap her a bit (which I think is OK if you ask her permission), but will also be mauling some jazz and classical - so the range of tonalities is broad. I've only ever used rounds and this is my first fretless, so enlighten me.

I can't say I'm big on the fretless slap sound without an epoxy board but I'd go with nickel rounds. I really like Ken Smith Burners on my fretless basses. If you nix the slap La Bella Tapewounds would also be a fantastic choice. That's what I had one #170 for most of the time I had it.

If you want to slap, I wouldn't recommend flats. I put them on #96 which was my first time ever using flats and I wasn't a big fan of them. I hear DR Sunbeams are really good but I couldn't find them any place locally so I put DR Lo-Riders on and like the sound of them.

I am really liking how this one is turning out. I am thinking spanish cedar wings with a wenge center.
And looking at the Mr. Walker posting of club members we will reach 100 very soon. Cool deal, Mr. Tom.

I have #126 if you want to add that to the list. BTW; Does anyone on here have #128? Tom built her on spec at the same time as mine and offered her to me but couldn't swing both. I still look at her on the gallery and feel like she's one that "got away." :bawl:

I'm probably the least quailified Club Clement member to try to answer this since I dont play fretless and I rarely slap.

But that never stopped me before!

On a fretless, my understanding is that most rounds (esp steels) can chew up a fretless board. BUT rounds seem to generate the best slap tone even on fretted instruments.

IMH (and under-qualified) O, if you're serious about the slapping thing, I think you should have the FB epoxied and use steel roundwounds.
OR try nickel rounds since they're generally "softer" than steels. they might not be as rough on the FB.

I have tried a few different strings, but I always come back to the starting point... my DR HiBeams or SunBeams.

I have tried the DR Black beauties and I've tried Elixirs, they both sound duller and less alive than my Hi- and Sunbeams. I have tried flats, I hate them... They just don't ring and I don't get my fretless zing at all.

So for me, it's DR HiBeams (or SunBeams for a little more warmth) all the way. Even on fretless. they don't eat so much away on the fingerboard, just make sure you don't vibrate across the fingerboard, but along the string, like you would on an upright bass.

As for slapping, rounds sound better than anything for that. Flats? Forget it. Tapewounds.. nah... too dead.

I'd say go with rounds, and Tom makes his fingerboard thick and solid, you have lots of fingerboard to level if you should ever need it.

The Hi- and Sunbeams are wound on a round core. Maybe other round core strings are similar, I have played a set of LaBella strings that are very similar, exposed core... they are the... stainless steels, or something like that? Don't remember and don't have the box here. I think they are ok, but not better than my HiBeams :)

So go with round-wound steel or nickel strings on a round core, is my advice :D

I've tried both Labella Deep Talkin quarters and tapes on my fretlsess basses. the tapes seem to have more voice and character than the D.T.'s. Also trying out some Roto Monel flats on the fretless 6, (E-F) not really slap-able but tapping works....could just be technique.
