String spacing - #170 has a 19mm space which, again, is pretty comfortable. I understand that many players go to 18mm at 6 or more strings. How much of a discernible difference is there in feel? I play more of a thumb and 4 finger fingerstyle style, but reserve the right to pop when needed.

The questions you raise are very "personal" in that they are subjective feelings and opinions. Some people love flat fingerboards, some people can't stand them. Personally... I don't need a LOT of curve, but I do need some.

If you have the chance, I would have checked out a Groove Tools bass. The GT7 (not the Bill Dickens model) has an almost flat fingerboard. To me, it seems it's curving the wrong way, cause your strings are getting thinner, so the straight line easily becomes almost an "outwards curve". I believe the GT-7 is also 18 mm string spacing at the bridge. IF you can get to compare it to the Bill Dickens signature, you should know how you feel about it. It has 16.5 mm string spacing, and it has a curved fingerboard. I find it a lot more comfortable than the flat ones. And the narrower string spacing makes the whole thing a little less intimidating to approach.

That said, I still don't use it much :D It is totally parked by my Clement 6-string. To me, there's a "mental" limit at 6 strings. I just can't seem to get accustomed to the extra string. I have my GTBD-7 tuned B-F, for information.

The thinner strings on a 7-string if you go all the way up, will be very thin, and they will be unwound. I have a bass (my Lise 4-string) tuned to piccolo (D-G-C-F for tension issues), and it's got a very clear and crystal-like tone. I like it a lot. The one or two lightest strings are unwound, and if they get too tense, they cut your fingers (or so it feels, anyway). So again, if you could get to check this out on a Dingwall or a Conklin GTBD-7, it would be an advantage, I think.

All in all, what you're asking for is doable... but whether you'll like the end result or not is difficult to answer up front. You are going to have a hard time selling it, though, that's for sure :D but then again, we don't build Clements to sell them, now, do we?! :D

Yup, right up my alley; right down my boulevard. I have 256 which is fretless 7 string but tuned F# to C, flat finger board and 19 mm string spacing.
The flat board at first feels almost concave because of the gauge of the strings as you go from C to F#. The strings are all as close to the board as the others but not the top where your fingers touch; therefore your fingers are going either uphill or down hill. but I got use to the feel and now it is very natural to my fingers even in swapping off to other basses that do have a radius and mine run 16", 12", 7.5". Finger adjustment only takes a few seconds now.
I get string lost at times on the 7 because of the range. Probable cause I play the 4 strings in the middle and then branch out at times.
I was very use to 19mm as a born to play condition and that has not changed on the 7 string.

Thanks GODBASSMAN. At the moment, I'm trending toward 6 strings and a radius, altough until an order is placed, changes will happen... I realized that a 6 string E tuning (EADG-CF) is actually about the same as piccolo tuning with 2 additional low strings (FB-EADG). Not sure I would want to go any higher than that.

As a bit of background, my thought process has evolved from taking my 2 main instruments - a 7 string acoustic fingerstyle guitar (BEADGBE, although I never play in standard) and my high-c tuned #170 (EADGC) and trying to conceptualize a hybrid playing style and instrument to fit the style.

5ths tuning opens up a whole repertoire of cello music (including my favorite Zoe Keating), and the left side of the Chapman Stick, and extends the range of the instrument without adding strings. Another interesting possibility to ponder...

My classical guitar is currently tuned in fifths with strings 6-3 at cello pitch; it's so much fun to play this way. When I get my next bass guitar, it will also be in tuned in fifths...more range with less muting.

I did own a Chapman Stick in the past, an SB8 to be exact, but it was tuned in standard 4ths.

I'll have to check out Zoe Keating.
