Not many choices for people who want a tight string spacing out there. Ibanez and ESP are the only names I can think of that produce a lot of 16.5mm spacing instruments. And the QA out of those factories can be sketchy. And for me the equation is easy to solve... Why would I spend $2000 on a standard model built in a factory when I can get a truly custom built bass for the same amount of money that is to my exact specifications and to much higher accuracy and with a totally different eye to playability and level of tolerance?
And in the process you get to follow the process from raw wood to finished bass... A process which is truly amazing and addictive in itself.
I'm a Clement player by choice, not by endorsement or free gifts or anything close to that. Not that I'm attractive bass wise enough to be of any interest to anyone in the industry :-D I stumbled upon Tom 's basses by coincidence many years ago, and it gave me the opportunity to make a bass that I had dreamt of come through at a fraction of the cost I was expecting, and with a result that exceeded my dream by far. It changed my view on basses and taught me that I don't have to be John Patitucci or Victor Wooten to have a bass built to my specifications. :-D
I think we should make a slogan for Tom. My suggestion would be something like
"Tom Clement Instruments - the instrument of your dreams at a price you could only dream of "
:-D
I guess I'm a good representative for the "never-sell-a-Clement" clan :-D I've got my Ryan 4, my Jon 6, my piccolo Lise 4, my Jazz 4, my Anne 6, my Willow double 4, my Phoenix 5 and my sweet little headless Darlene 6, and my little Proto- Ryan guitar... Do I need more?
With the exception of a couple cheap basses that I keep around in case of someone wanting to borrow a bass or that I'm going places that aren't worthy of Clement company, and two oldies that I just can't make myself out up for sale, my clements ARE the collection now. But am I saturated???
Of course not! That's why I've just commissioned a new build again... From my count above, I guess it'll be my Clement #10...And this is really going to be a special piece!!!
I'm going to hold back on the details on this one for a while, cause I'm extremely excited and this time I'm really stretching out into unknown territory :-D but the shape is the new Angel, which Tom and I have designed from the bottom up together. And hopefully my Angel (nick name "Snow Angel" after my girlfriend) will be a brilliant statement of our friendship and musical and bassical connection. :-D
Excited!!!
