Club Dark Star

Hey guys, here's my 2005 MIK Lakland Skyline BG with factory-installed Hammon Dark Star pickup. It's a great bass with the big full P neck; my first experience with the Dark Star sound. I am impressed by the presence and attack of this instrument. It's really bright!
Why do they call it Dark Star???

Nice bass It depends on the other ingredients - my DS P (ash body/wenge neck/ebony board) has a rich deep tone, not bright at all even w the treble up.

I call this bass "the business". It's my current fav! 2000 American standard with ds, ba bridge, and thumb rest added.

I just did a search of this thread and realized that I hadn't posted my own Dark Star'ed creation to this thread. I'm sure many have seen it elsewhere, but it definitely belongs here. I've had it for a few years and recently the neck seemed to have shifted slightly in the pocket (more likely I put it together slightly off originally), but a bridge reposition and a good setup and it's back!

My new T-40/Wal/Decade'ish Frankenbass
Suffice to say it's a T-40 neck, custom body from "Redemptionbass" with the finish on the body and refinishing the neck done by yours truly. It sprung from a combination of my desire to have a P-necked Decade and a severe shortage of cash. The body is inspired by the Lakland Decade, Wal, and EB/SG basses.

Dan Lakin saw it some years back it and said it reminded him of the Decade prototypes!

Cool. The body looks like alike a cross between a Gibson SG and the long horn of a Fender.

Lovely. Every time I see something like this it makes me want a wooden pickguard even more.

No idea which bass I'd put one on yet, but I want one!

the only thing this thread does is enable my justifications for building a dark star P, which would round out my P bass situation to...4 p basses.

I can't believe he let that thing go.

He saved it from an uncertain future of getting parted out by the guy he sold it to. He bought it back and sold it to me. It's shares my primary slots now along with a Moollon P-Classic and a Wal MkII 5er. Seriously though, these Darkstars are unreal. I just recorded with them last week and once the tracks are mixed I'll post some up here. Best sounding pickups I've ever used and Oz matched them perfectly to this bass...with a ton of blood, sweat, and tears to go along with it.

I'm new to the world of darkstar pickups, but I'm loving what I'm sounding and seeing. Can anyone who has a p bass with a darkstar pickup in the sweet spot describe the difference between the darkstar and the standard precision pickup? What they prefer about the darkstar?

The DS is a big, fat, bright, clear single coil.
The Precision is a middy split coil humbucker.

It's not quite that simple, but it's almost that simple.
