The brightness is what separates the two the most to my ears. The DS executions might be a little bigger down low and definitely extend further up top. They lack a little of that signature Precision hump in the midrange, but are by no means lacking in midrange. It's an interesting sounding pickup that I've not heard replicated in a different format.
Thanks. Do they suit a specific genre? I play mostly rock, and while I don't own a precision, I want one. They're a rock staple.
I've played mine in a hiphop/funk/pop band, a modern country band, a funk/RnB band, an 80s hair metal band, a hiphop/rock band... They're versatile.
In over 40 years of gigging, I've found I can take any bass to any job and make it work, as long as it doesn't suck somehow. Like: no treble response, no bass response, horrid strings, crap pick or something.

What I was trying to determine was whether these pickups would suit me. I think they sound great, and a lot of people have said they like these pickups, but I was looking at a p bass for the contrast in tone it would provide to my stingray.

Thanks all! It was a fun project and I am very happy with the way it turned out. It sounds great - especially playing Link Wray songs!
Thank you! Yeah there's a Fred Hammon in the neck position and a Curtis Novak in the "sweet spot" position. I know it's tough to see but there's a fancy white knob that's a blend between the two pickups. I find myself using that more than the tone knob
Yeah totally unintended! I was going more for the Starfire II type positioning. Bass is still a work in progress, I'm going to refinish it in a yellowed blonde.
