Hi all, I have been lurking on this thread for a while, and was wondering if anyone (particularly George or Marcel) knows if there has been a general consistancy in the depth of the neck profile on the BN5 or the VF5?
I hear people describe them as "thin and fast" and some describe them as having a fuller "c" type profile. I have played a few that seemed to be comfortably in the middle.
I think I read somewhere that they used to be thinner but have gone to a fuller profile for depth of tone? I have a really hard time playing 5's that have "thin and fast" necks as a doubler. Cramp city.

Hey Dylan,
Our BNs have a thin to medium neck profile and the VFs sit between a C and V shape. The ability to set up really low (with no fret buzz) is also what makes our basses "fast".
That being said, some owners request a slightly different neck shape when ordering. Due to the variation in the used market I'd suggest playing before you buy or state your preference when ordering new.

Edmond has struck again!
With his AC5, Edmond has posted another youtube video that is just a monster. I swear that at around 2:00 his fingerboard starts smoking!
Incidentally, t is AMAZING how different Edmond's tone is on this recording with his AC5 than Alain's tone is with his AC6. There are lots of reasons for that... redwood top verses spruce, DR DDTs rather than Fbass strings, the amount of piezo that is dialed in... but mostly the styles (and hands) of these players are quite different. You can really hear Jaco's heavy influence in Edmond's playing on this clip.

Having been a happy BN6 owner for 8 years, and having seen so many other fine insturments coming from Canada, what is it about our northern neighbors that encourages such bass building mastery? I would love to see George and Sheldon Dingwall work together on a build...What would that be like?

I never thought of an F/Dingwall hybrid. I have thought about an F/Barker hybrid: a vertical AC6 classic. (The Barker is the tall black bass to the left).

So....
I think my question got lost amongst the different threads....
I have no issues with the Nickel DR Lo-riders on my 60s VF5 other than that they are hard to get in a 5 string set...
Does anyone have any other suggestions for an alternative VINTAGE sounding option???

And as for magic being your forte', Marcel, I beg to differ.
The Fbass site is the nicest website of any builder I know of, and getting better.

I don't know if you want to go so far as using flats, but on my Alleva Coppolo I've been using Thomastik Infeld Jazz flats, and what a nice combination that makes. I've got a James Jamerson vibe, only with better articulation and slightly better tone happening with that bass.

I also have a Jazz Bass with the same TI flats on, so I'd just like the most vintage-y sounding round wounds first - if that doesn't work then the flats are an option.
In fact, before I got the Jazz with the TI flats on I procrastinated about asking George to just put flats on the VF5 to start with, but I didn't want to mess with George's magic sauce - which I have come to respect in the 10 years I've been playing F Basses...
