Right, sorry about getting confused about whether or not you have the bass. I'm struggling with insomnia again and am seeing doctors, so hopefully I'll get a bit brighter soon.

[Smiling] I remember that day well. For me it came after my fretless AC6.

I had some pretty nice basses ... Fodera, Alleva Coppolo, Pedulla, Nordy, vintage Fenders, etc.

But when my new AC6 BLEW my mind, and I thought about my BN5 and BN6, I realized that with the VF5 line, I could basically just have George build whatever I was looking for in a bass tone, and have the added advantage of Fbass playability, ergonomics, preamp, etc. With that consistency, I thought I could trade basses between songs in a heartbeat and instantly feel comfortable.

Moreover, like Jimmy Copollo's shop the Fbass guys, to a person, are all very nice, cool people to work with. You feel like your bass dollars (whether they be U.S. or Canadian) are supporting something good as well.

I dreamed up something a little outside of George's standard build and he and his team delivered. I am blown away by the result! Right out of the box I was able to play anything I normally play on my Alleva-Coppolo 5 string, this thing doesn't even feel like it has 6 strings. I'm really starting to be convinced that all things considered F basses are the best bang for your buck.

Here are the specs again for those who may not have caught my initial post upon ordering...

Natural Ash w/ Black Grain in Satin finish
Big body - about 1/4" wider all around and a reshaped upper horn
Maple fingerboard
60's/BN5 pickup placement (which is now back as the new standard after this and a couple other successful tests!)
Drop-tuner on the B string (to A)

By the way, I am very intrigued about the new standard placement for BN6s. I wish I could A/B the two.

Also, the body of your bass just looks so right. It looks as if the horn is shorter because it also looks like, hm, how do I describe this?

You know how a single cut bass attaches to the neck in a way the goes many frets deeper than a double cut bass?

Well this look like a single cut somewhat, only it does have a top horn.

I REALLY like this; it seems like it would give the neck additional stability and perhaps provide more body resonance for the vibrating string.

That is a very cool bass my friend.

Thanks for the warm welcome Tom! I'm definitely glad to finally be in the club and have my BN6 I've been dreaming about for over 2 years since I personally met George at NAMM 2010.

The body size is pure vanity for me, as I may have mentioned before... I just wanted it to look more proportioned to my 6'1" 300 lb. frame... But I'm really happy that there were positive tonal consequences to it. Even as far back as last year George thought it would sound better due to the added mass. The upper horn was George's interpretation on what would add a bulkier look to the bass... I think it just looks chubby, rather than the sleek/sexy lines we're used to with F basses... Sorta BNF-ish the way it came out with the lower horn looking like it's so far back into the body.... The best part... It is right at 10 lbs.!

The pickup placement was a NAMM experiment... I just loved the way the BN5 sounded and George told me that before the show he was playing some old models with same 60's placement and liked how they sounded... So I went for it!

Is that a typo? Did you mean to say "like" our "unlike"? Because in all of my personal experiences, Jimmy Coppolo was not nice or cool, he was condescending to me, took over a year to make my bass (after being told 4 months) and accused me of mistreating my basses (even though it was the Contego that he shipped his basses in that caused the damage, not me).
In fact, it was Jimmy being rude to me that led me to Fbass :)

Ah, I'm glad to learn this back story. I have to admit I was silently quite worried about the pickup placement decision. I think the tone of my BN6 is quite perfect, and I thought you were messing with that, not knowing George already had done the R&D on it.

I'd LOVE to play your bass; I'm so curious about it.

I know it's still far off but if you make it down for NAMM next January I can arrange for you to take all the play time you like!

In the meantime, I shot a couple vids of myself noodling around on it... I'm not confident enough to post them publicly but if you pm me your email I can try to send them.

Boy, can I relate to the hassle of dealing with UPS. For obvious reasons, I deal with this ALL of the time. I now have a direct contact that I deal with for these issues, and I always get them resolved, but it's an issue about 80% of the time.

Fortunately for my customers, they don't have to deal with this as I take care of all of it.

Good point. I've bought a couple of Fbasses from you and was totally sheltered from the hassle... thanks again my friend.

If it was alder - rosewood with pickups in the 60s positions, then I like Fbass strings.

I don't own a maple - ash - 70s positions VF5, but if I did I'd first try DR Fatbeams, then Nickle DR Sunbeams.
