Hey Guys,
I need your opinions... My BN6 is absolutely magical, it's perfect in every way except for 1 area cosmetically... Would the extra dark part under the bridge by the tone knob bother you? I'm feeling like it needs to be sanded more to make it more linear like the rest of the bass. Would this be worth the extra cost to you to have it redone either by George or someone local to me?

The start of my Fbass BN-6. Here's a few pics of the body and top. Still waiting on pictures of the neck from the Fbass crew. I've never played one before but I'm really looking forward to getting this bass. George is carving a custom super thin neck on it for me. 19.5mm at the 1st fret (from front to back of neck) 22.5mm at the 15th fret. I love super thin fast playing necks!

Looks terrible to me but I don't think there's anything they can do about it it's the grain. That would definitely bother me.

I've seen other examples of it matching the laminates in the neck and it looks pretty good...

BUT

Take this for what it's worth, but that bass would be an absolute stunner if the shells used the same wood as the top and if they had exposed poles.

I wasn't trying to disrespect anyone seriously with that remark, it was just some gentle ribbing.

This reminds me of the Christmas song with the lyric, "Walking in a winter wonderland." Someone made a parody of it with the lyric, "Walking 'round in women's underwear," and now everytime I hear the real song, i hear that blasted parody lyric instead, and it has ruined it for me.

I've stared at your bass, and watched you play it in multiple videos and I never once noticed it until you pointed it out just now, and now that you have pointed it out, it is far more noticeable.

But I think your pointing it out is what makes it noticeable now.

I have a fretless AC6 that everyone tells me is stunning, including non bass players, and non musicians. I'd include a photo, but ipads suck at a lot of things, including a lot of web browser based tasks. Anyway, the ebony on this bass has a 3 inch or so light spot about 60% up the neck.

I've been asked a few times if it is from wear. I tell them no, it's just how real wood is -- it is just random that way.

Your grain definitely does not bother me either, but it's not my bass. If it does bother you though, then perhaps you should sell it to me for half price, then use the money to start your savings for your next BN6. [Wink].

Seriously, if it were my bass, I wouldn't mess with it. But if it does really bother you, I guess you are doing the right thing to look at your options.

That is an interesting suggestion. I thought about how it would look with covers that match the top, but I never thought about exposed poles. I'm no wood worker, but I imagine pickup covers matching the "stripes" would be a lot harder to make, but I'd like them. I think it would look great and would be unique, which I like too.

The good news is he is looking into this now while something can still be done, if need be.

If it were mine I'd probably bother about it, I also think it should be more linear, but I don't see here any serious danger, 'cause bass doesn't sound bad.
If music you play needs to attract people's eyes I would sell the bass and buy another Fbass, but if it needs to attract people's ears so everything is OK, 'cause Fbass is the greatest instrument that sounds perfect! :cool:

What if the grain goes deeper, you sand for no reason. If you are going to go to the trouble of sanding and refinishing, why not stain it to cover it up?

Thanks for the thoughts and opinions... I definitely will take my time deciding what to do. Also, I think this is all a product of low gig season... I can't wait to be busy again and just focus on tone and playing... C'mon summertime!

MVPBASS, yes I've thought about the stain option as well... So that's in consideration.

Normally BN6s have 19mm string spacing at the bridge, and that spacing narrows as it gets nearer the nut.

What confuses me is that your spacing seems to be wider than normal, which would make the neck super fat, not thin.

Are you referring to something other than string spacing?

Ah, downtime... that makes sense then.

Guys, I've seen videos of Yohann playing this bass, and Mitch is right: it is very nice. My BN6 is Fender sounding, but has a bigger, darker tone to it, while at the same time having a sort of ping or an edge to its tone. Yohann's is more Fender-like period, particularly the Sadowsky (60s spacing on ash and maple) vibe. It is very appealing, and while I would not give up my current BN6 to have one like Yohann's (because I just LOVE my BN6's tone), I definitely would consider getting another BN6 made a la Yohann's specs. A bass like that could challenge me as to whether or not I need to keep all of my 5 string basses.

Yes I'm not referring to string spacing at all I'm referring to the thickness/thinness of the neck measured from front of the fretboard at the first fret to the back of the neck. (19.5mm) and at the 15 fret (22.5mm) which is pretty darn thin. Not sure if you've ever played a Pedulla MVP. But they are an absolute dream to play on for me because of the thin necks. Also Sukop and roscoes have thin necks that I like. I personal only play 18.5 to 19mm strings spacing but prefer 19mm.

Yes, I have (I hold Pedulla club member #4 I believe), and I like their necks too. In fact, I came THIS close to getting a 19mm Hexabuzz instead of my first fretless Fbass, an AC6 signature. I'm sure I'd have been glad with either bass, but the AC6 has DEFINITELY been a fantastic decision for me.

Thanks Bro... Y'know what not even 2 full days since I asked for opinions I think I'm now ok with it... For now anyway. It does kinda make it unique.

If it gets to me again later, I got a quote from Pat Wilkins on a refin... Even if I change the color, the cost would only equal to what George would've charged for a non-standard finish - in the $300 range. I can live with that, if I even get there... I'll beat it up first then get her redone, LOL.
