Yikes! Hopefully nothing I'm writing is being construed as dogging Fodera... Fodera and Fbass are probably my two favorite bass makers.

In fact, I worry what will happen to our bass world when Vinnie and George decide it is time to retire. Who will the torch be passed to?

Better get Foderas and Fs now while you can! ;)

Tom7 makes several excellent points here, but I want to possibly correct a few things, based on my understanding.

Fodera owns the shop that produces their strings. While it is not in Brooklyn, they do own the shop, from what I recall in talking with Jason about this.

And George's strings are made by labella, but they are not only custom gauges but also the winding at the bridge is different as well. IIRC, the winding for FBass strings leaves a little less exposed core...

Like Fodera, George's Fbass strings are manufactured by someone else and are sold under the Fbass brand. George's special sauce in this instance is in the specific gauges of the strings he has made for his instruments.

I've played my BN6 through an SWR rig that was provided for us (I can't think of the name off hand), and really liked it.

Yes, it was definitely colored compared to my Demeter head and El Whappo cabinet... but I liked that color!

I've always thought SWR matched up well with Fender Jazz basses, and BN6s are in that vibe.

Of course your mileage may vary. Are you looking at getting your BN6 with a maple or ebony fingerboard?

I've heard Jason talk about his string people, and it left me with the definite impression that they were contractors not employees, but I KNOW you would know this answer for sure, whereas I was assuming.

And I didn't know that about the winding on the Fbass strings. I'm glad they leave less exposed core; I hate it when the core comes too close to the bridge pickup... I've given myself owies forgetting I can't dig in too far back there.

No one has dogged Fodera yet but as you know, it can quickly turn that easy add they seem to be the Talkbass target in many threads.

Just to clear up, when I say why dost George expand his string line, I know that Labella makes Fbass strings. Just wondering why he doesn't expand his line, after all, he had Fbass preamp stomp box, straps, apperal and soon to be cabs. Why not branch out and take some of that money away from DR, GHS,, Fodera, etc. Some people, I myself am one, are very brand loyal.

HI Tom!

Thanks for the insight! The BN6 I'm looking at is a No Pore Filler with a Maple board.

Yeah the SWR stuff is solid, thats for sure. I was thinking about Aguilar, Demeter or even Mark Bass.

George, just curious what tecamp rig you're digging on? Im very happy with their gear and can only imagine how great a Bn would sound through my rig. In my mind they're a perfect tonal compliment for one another.

On the Amp topic - I have owned nearly everything out there and have settled on Genz Benz and most importantly their Uber Quad cab's, full range and very monitor like sound with no coloration what so ever. With two of the Uber Quads under a Shuttle Max 9.2 my F-Bass is about as articulate and open sounding than anything I have ever heard.

I really like:
2 X 10 puma 500, combo
puma 900, and 2 X10 cab
But the best is a Black Jag 900, with their S212 cab

It took us about three years to develop the exposed core strings. I no longer have the luxury of that available time. Plus there are many more string manufacturers now, that I can pick and choose through their many lines and find a match to my needs. They are also more willing to modify strings if required.

So this is not to say I have stopped string research, but am going about it in a different way. What I would prefer to do is find a standard string that works, so that strings would be easily accessible to any musician in the world.

Very cool! I own an m212 and puma 900, and am very happy. I've been curious about the 210 cabs as well, and the bigger heads ala black jag have my interest.. Now I have yet another reason to come up there for a visit!!

On the amp topic

FWIW I use an Acoustic Image Focus head and an Accugroove Tri-115L cabinet - I couldn't be happier.

Well I suppose if I found a smaller cabinet at a fraction of the weight of the Accugroove but sounded as good - then I could be happier :-). But I'm not convinced that's going to happen any time soon....

The combination is great - a really transparent, musical sounding head and an earth-shaking cab!

My Aguilar Tone Hammer 500 & 2 GS112's work great with my BN6 (and everything else, really)... As Tom mentioned with SWR, I think Aguilar also colors your sound but it does in such a beatiful way and I love it!

Also, the TecAmp rig that George had at NAMM was killer!

Brand loyalty... good point. I know a lot of Sadowsky guys who swear by Sadowsky strings, and I think they are outsourced too.
