Club Fbass (thread 13)

Do you find the Fbass jj pickups noisy at all. I know single coils can have a bit of hum sometimes. I find my j pup in my vfpj5 when soloed can be a bit noisy. Was thinking of a jj but wondering about the noise factor.
Thanks

Mine aren't, but they are the Aguilar Hum Canceling pickups. Very quiet. I have other J pups that are total hum-fests when solo'd.

There’s a small amount of 60hz hum when one of the pickups are soloed, it’s very subtle on this bass and never a problem at performance volume.

Hi All. My band just put out a promo video that I played my Fbass VF5 in (as well as my 63 Pbass for one song.) The Fbass has Aguilar DCB pickups in it and while I love those pickups I have come to realize that I am just much more of a jazz bass kind of person, so I am going to be switching them to some Nordy big singles. Hopefully they will be a good fit with the FBass pre-amp.

I did exactly that with my BN-6. I drove it up to Nordstrand, and Maurilio swapped in some NJ6-S humbuckers (they actually fit inside the F Bass shells). I didn't feel the pickups worked well with the F bass preamp, due to the fact I wanted more gain from the bass without having to crank the EQ to get it. So, Maurilio installed a Nordstrand 3B-5B preamp (modified with separate bass/treble controls, and a higher treble EQ point) and I'm absolutely in love with it. It's nearly as transparent as the F preamp, and it's dead quiet for hum. Nothing against the F pickups and electronics, but this set-up works better for me. And I have to give a shout-out to Maurilio...absolutely top notch work and a great guy to boot!

Mo is the best, he installed the same pre in my bn6 a few years ago.

I have a sadowsky preamp in my fbass. Typically I run it passive unless the room I'm in needs something. I find that there are more mids when the preamp is not engaged. I love the old Fbass single coils. I gladly take great sounding pickups with a little hum. To me hum cancelling pickups have a much scoopier sound, which i don't really like.

Me too. If I ever decide to get a VF it will have single coils. They have a certain openness that I can never quite get with hum cancelling pickups, at least the ones I've been able to compare.

Hi guys...

I just got a 34” BN5 with Ash body, Ebony board and Burl Maple Top (will post pics later).

And I found that for this particular Bass, the best sound is when I boost the Low and Mid almost all the way, with the treble flat and tone cut halfway.

So, I’m wondering if a set of Nylon flats will make the sound even better. I have a Bubby Lewis signature string set made by LaBella, I was told that the sound is similar to LaBella’s Gold Nylons.

Does anyone here ever put Nylons on their BN? Thanks

Has anyone put flatwounds (or any other none exposed core string) on their F Bass AC6?
I investigated it a few years ago and from memory, George advised that I'd most likely have have to alter the AC6's fixed bridge or shim the neck?

I used Thomastic Jazz Flats on my AC6 and really loved them.
I didn't feel the need to adjust the bridge or nut, although I knew it would have been even better to adjust the nut for the heavier B, but apart from that I was amazed at how good they felt and played without any adjustment. The action on my older AC6 wasn't super low, so if you have a more recent one with lower action as standard you may have different results...

Man, I am sorry to hear that because now I have to talk myself out of buying it daily! :) Still holding out for the AC6. On a happier note... I know Marcel et al will help you find just the right one for you. Based on your previous selections, I can hardly wait to see it.

So, I didn’t make it a month. I broke weak today and bought the BNF6. Now, the brief wait for shipping. I so enjoy playing these Basses that I don’t want to play anything else. I’ve got 2 or 3 really nice Basses that will be for sale shortly. Can’t wait for the new fretless to show up!
