Club Fbass (thread 13)

Thanks for the feedback. I don’t feel the seam as I’m playing so not such a big deal. I did notice there is a tiny bit of movement in the neck pocket. Not sure if it’s related but on of the washers underneath the screws that bolt the neck on is looses. The bass still plays and sound incredible but I am thinking I might send it up to F bass one day for a once over. I also kind of want to put gold hard on her.

Wow! Beautiful. I can’t imagine any movement of the neck ; it’s a big pocket and every one I’ve ever seen has been super tight.

Sand down the seams, tighten up any loose screws and enjoy that thing!!

A couple of my early 2000’s BN’s had neck seams you could feel. I just got used to it, and they never had any impact on the stability of the neck. But I’m a weird stickler about certain things so I can imagine some people getting hung up on it

Part of it is that I’m a trained classical trumpet player. We are taught to be extra cranky about our instruments!! Other then these small details it’s really amazing. The tone is soooooo good and it does not play like a 34.5 scale. I had a Lakland 35” bass and it felt huge. Something about the way the BN5 hangs makes it feel as comfy as could be. Overall I feel like it’s already made a positive impact on my playing. I’m getting all sorts of new ideas. Sick bass.

I was at FBass HQ a couple weeks ago...funny you mention the neck pocket. So as I was talking.to Marcel and George, I mentioned another brand of bass that I own with a wenge neck. They winced a bit because wenge tends to add compression to the tones...too much for their liking. Anyway, George made an interesting comment on something to try. Back off the neck screws just a hair...he says it reduces the compression from the wenge. I haven't tried it yet. I will though....these guys make some of the best basses on the planet....so who am I to argue....

I got to take her for a spin tonight at rehearsal. It sounds so amazing. It’s the tone I imagine in my head with all that thunder and sustain. Not a hint of slop or mud. The B string is insane. The way it holds together and balances with the rest of the bass is incredible. I would say the same for the G string as well. I tended to avoid it on my music man sterling but it sounds thick enough to balance with the rest of the strings. I love the sound of the neck pickup but ended up settling on the full volume neck/bridge setting. I am still pleasantly surprised with the ergonomics. The bass sits in my lap in the exact position as if I were standing. Overall it sounds huge but feels more compact then it actually is. I think I’m in love.

Yeah and be ready for other basses feeling big and bulky in comparison , at least most do to me nowadays after playing mine for almost 19 years now!

The BN5 feels and looks kinda like a big bass. But, sit it next to a jazz bass and see who looks like they need a diet. Lol

Soooooo...... Mr George F., doing a custom neck for my VF4. I watched this go from blocks of various woods, to this...quite amazing (and time consuming) process. Having a custom neck built from scratch, by the man himself, is super exciting for me. Having carpal tunnel sucks, and when i visited the HQ, we discussed and then it flourished into this concept etc., :)

Can you tell us a bit about the custom carve features that are intended to help with your carpal tunnel syndrome?

Does anyone know the approximate wait time on a custom VF series bass?

Mine took 7-8 months. They’re trying to speed that up from what Marcel last told me about a week ago
Totally worth the time. My build last year VF6-PJ Fretless required a good degree of customization.

Even though I had it fully paid by Sept/Oct 2017, the work didn’t officially begin until Jan 2018 because they were prioritizing their NAMM builds (which FBass seems to be sitting out this year.) That was very understandable. From the actual start time, I received it on June 1. So my actual build wait-time was about just about 6 months. A good portion of the time was waiting for the manufacturing of a 6-string bent plate by a supplier.

Can you post a pic?
