Club Fbass (thread 13)

Can you describe the difference?

Not able to do a vid or audio just yet but I can say compared to the Aguilar 70's pickups (staggered pole pieces) that were in the bass before, the Ulyate pickups are more evenly balanced.

Maybe a little more output but a good match with the f-bass preamp.

I wish I had the aguilar 60hc to compare them to but I like the Ulyate pickups better so far for this bass compared to the Aggie 70's pickups.

I spent all weekend at NAMM and I really enjoyed playing all sorts of different basses. There are a lot of high quality companies putting out a lot of high quality basses. And even though I enjoyed playing them, I came away from this weekend thinking that I am still really happy with all four of my F Basses and still very content with my collection. George and Marcel as always are very personable and easy to talk to and their booth had a great assortment of F bass possibilities. The whole crew there are great people. This was a great experience for me, I am happy with everything I have. The only thing I’m GAS’ing for is a Tech 21 Geddy Lee 2112 preamp that I tried this weekend. Great pedal!

Today's roster update adds three basses to the lines of three long-standing club members:

Got another! :hyper:
Picked up yesterday afternoon, an ‘11 BN6 in *mint* condition. Phenomenal sounding bass, just need to get some real FBass strings on it.

What more could a bassist need than those two basses right there!

I am really taken by this BN6. Tops give basses compression, which i why I haven't yet owned an FBass with a top... although I have been on the verge of getting one many times!

It is my understanding that BN6s with tops are more compressed than BN5s with top, because more wood is involved.

To be clear, there is NOTHING wrong with compression. Many of us add compression electronically anyway, so there is a good case to be made that basses with tops have a natural compression that makes tone better.

I just haven't been somewhere where I could personally try a BN6 with a top — or hear a recording of a BN6 that I *know* has a top.

If you wish, I'd love to hear a description or recording of that BN6. :bassist::D

Every time I see those pickups, I think how they look like an off/on switch on a phone or iPad. Obviously I spend too much time designing software these days.
Ha!

I love the way the look and as far as sound I am putting them through a solid week or two of rehearsals and shows.

Can't give a totally fair review yet until I use my actual rig and pedal board, etc. And in a band mix. We will see.

So, it seems to me that every VF PJ bass I see has the J pup in 60’s position. Does anyone ever order in 70’s position? 60’s looks cramped, but must not be that bad if everyone has that setup. I haven’t played one, so I can’t speak from experience. I would think 70’s would have more bite. Can anyone tell me about their experiences?

I don't know for sure what's standard. But mine are single coil Aguilars. I do have a buddy with a VF5 that has the humcancelling ones though, and he had thought those were standard.

I guess that's not much help...
Thanks for the response.

I actually spoke to George on the phone and the standards are in fact, Aguilar 5jHC's for the VF5. Just in case anybody needs that info.

Also, the old F-bass pups which I always thought were Duncans, were not. They were actual F-bass made pickups. Not the same dimensions as the Aguilars for those that might need that info as well.

Except the early Studio models, which did have Seymour Duncans. I think most Studio's have those, now that I think about it.

I’ve got this VF JJ model, not sure exactly what the spacing is, but it has tons of bite:

Currently strung with DR Pure Blues nickel wounds and is probably the most snarly, 70s sounding bass I’ve ever owned.
